Funny how everyone is mentioning King of the Dead when it is their obvious magnum opus. From what ive seen, this is pretty unanimous. Does anyone else think they have a better album?

As for Manilla Road, I love their thrash era as well, but I rank The Deluge slightly higher than Mystification. Still these are my one and two MR albums respectively, though Crystal Logic is a really close third. As big of a fan of MR that I am, I admittedly still dont own Metal. I have to change that.

I go between Melissa and Dont Break the Oath as Mercyful Fate's best, both albums are equally good in different ways. If someone were to put a gun to my head I would probably pick Melissa, but please dont do this to me.

Other random ones (some already mentioned):
Judas Priest - Stained Class
Saint Vitus - S/T
Iron Maiden - S/T (more consistent than Killers, otherwise A-side Killers is best)
Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Megadeth - Peace Sells...
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
Ozric Tentacles - Jurassic Shift
Cianide - The Dying Truth
Immolation - Close to a World Below
Venom - Black Metal
Asphyx - Last One on Earth (yes I dont think The Rack is better)
Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark
Entombed - Left Hand Path
King Diamond - Fatal Portrait
Opeth - Still LIfe

What? MA,YH doesn't sound much like Morningrise at all. It was the start of their new style which they pretty much copied for the next 4 or so albums.

That's true. They didn't use the amount of counterpount melodies in their music that was much more common when they had Johann DeFarfalla in the band. The death metal sound got heavier from My Arms, Your Hearse to Watershed. Then, they just did prog rock with the new albums.

Woah, that's surprising. My favourite would never win, Metal, but I didn't expect anybody especially you to name Mystification.

Great album though.

It's a tough call, but it ultimately comes down to the evil sound of the production and Mark's vocals being particularly baleful throughout the album.

Lol I don't think any of the old albums sound much like the new albums. My point was the MA, YH was the album on which they learned to write whole songs with parts that interlock and compliment one another (you said something similar in another thread recently). Heritage felt a little like the older albums only in that it was a backwards step (for me) compositionally - too many jarring transitions, melodies tailing off into nowhere, quiet parts used to bridge the gaps between disparate riffs. Pale Communion is like MA, YH in that it feels more complete, and has more "flow", which makes sense as they're learning how to pull off a new style.

Eh, MAYH, Still Life, Blackwater Park and Ghost Reveries are all structurally quite similar and follow similar songwriting patterns. They're nothing like Orchid and Morningrise except superficial similarities like both having distorted and acoustic sections.

I'm not very familiar with anything past Ghost Reveries and I'm not a huge fan of the band or anything. I only listen to the first 3 in full and then select songs here and there if I ever get the urge to listen to them.

I feel like you're disagreeing with points I'm not really making. I do think there are differences between those albums, but I'm fine with grouping those four together.

Not so sure about this... Opeth do have a distinctive riffing style and sense of melody which was certainly in evidence on Morningrise at any rate.

I'm probably the other way round - I overlistened on mid-period Opeth when I first got into them, so I probably listen to the recent albums most often. I only really listen to the first two if I'm on a massive Opeth kick.
