lately I've been focused quite heavily on Evergrey's Recreation Day; it's the first of their's I've heard. it's got alot of elements going, a bit of prog, quiet piano-based segments, and yet quite enough heavy riffs to keep me happy.
bands like evergrey and nevermore are the only true hope for metal, I believe, because they flex the boundaries of metal rather than being constrained by them. rather than a bunch of posers like glenn benton or those makeup guys from the frosty north poncing about, and as soon as they try even a bit of innovation their fans cry sellout.
I think the last true innovation in black metal was perhaps In the Nightside Eclipse, which opened up some possibilities, but that was quite a while ago.
on a side note, and because I don't want to start up another Metallica thread, there's a short interview with Hetfield on http://www.Rollingstone.com in which he sounds very revitalized and psyched. I'm not a huge 'tallica fan but I am starting to get very curious about this new disc.
