ProgPower VI Line-up

The MTV blurb was a joke, first it featured Marco during the entire commercial. It was about thirty seconds long with only a flash of Tarja. They don't even show her singing. They are promoting I Wish I had an Angel which is the pop of all pop Nightwish songs. I saw it 3 times in a 2 week period.
Weird

1. Pagans Mind - new cd this spring/summer and the big hit of PP4
2. Stride - Good buzz going around after the pre party show at pp4, plus a new album.
3. Angra - new cd out now and big hit at pPP3
4. Pyramaze- new disc and how can you not have Lance play a his "new band" ?
5. Kotipelto - Him or Strato ill be happy.
6. Shaman - Maybe a longshot but you never know what Glenn can do.
7. Symphorce - after the crowd reaction and Andy's reaction to the crowds...
8. Evergrey - Ill be shocked if the grey will not grace us.
9. Symphony X - New album they shouuld be there.
10.Rob Rocks Rage of Creation- Only plays overseas and in Fla?? after his Performance with Kotipelto he needs a spot even if to open one of the 2 nights...

Evergrey AGAIN??!?!? As good as they are, damn, I've seen them enough times to last me for the next 5 years. I sure hope Evergrey and Symphony X are NOT in consideration AGAIN when there are so many other bands out there that deserve a view.

As much as I like Evergrey's new release - I agree on that. The thought has always crossed my mind that with the more and more PP's, and the more and more awesome performances, everyone is going to want everyone to return - which will eventually leave very few slots for bands that haven't played the fest yet.

*shrugs*

General That would be bad business. If they could be had for 3rd or 4th slot money said:
I disagree. The majority of headlining bands at PP can't headline the US on their own. I don't think the PP headlining slot has anything to do with what the band would be able to do on their own in the US. Further, I think Glenn already mentioned that he didn't know what to do since the headliner he was considering was now being brought on a US tour. Given that, I did not know that there was such a rumor out that they were nearly a 3rd slot band last year. Just my take on it.

I am no doubt going to make a few people mad with this statment. However, I feel it needs to be said. Why are there so many people asking for and wanting bands to play PP that are Death Metal type bands or those with grunters and growlers? This is a Prog and power metal festival is it not? If I want to see death metal bands I can go to any number of festival. Progpower USA only comes once a year. I would hate to see it turn into any other old death metal festival. This festival should stay true to it's roots (Fates warning, Helloween, Dream Theater, Gamma Ray,Jag Panzer...etc.) & currrent Bands like ( Angra, Shaman, Heavenly, Pagand Mind, Dinonysus, Masterplan,Rhapsody,Royal Hunt, Artension, Ayreon...etc. I am not downing the Death Metal think, I just think it has it's palce and I don'yt believe that place is PP.

Who are the death metal bands of which you speak?

okay...maybe not acctual "death metal bands" but any of the band that have been mentioned that have death metal vocals..grunters , growlers....you know the type. To me, there is no talent in grunting or growling. I think it takes away from what is otherwise a genre overflowing with talented people. This is just my opinion.

Jag Panzer would rip in a 3rd spot. They've had at least two studio discs since their last time out.

A couple other bands that I'd like to see get some consideration would be, Mystic Prophecy, DGM, Vision Divine, Magnitude 9, and Orphaned Land.

I could not agree more about Jag Panzer. If you ask me, there return to PP is long overdue. I also agree with Vision Divine & DGM. Mag 9 would be cool.

I think I know what you mean. I haven't seen much mention of true death metal bands in this forum, so you are probably talking about bands such as Mercenary, Orphaned Land , and Into Eternity. Two years ago I wouldn't have liked any of those bands, but I think they fit into the progressive or power genre because they also use clean vocals and are either power, or progressive.

Orphaned Land for instance would probably be the most progressive band on the bill, but they do use death vocals. Mercenary's new disc contains almost no death vocals, but does use some shouting, gruffer vocals, and a bit of shrieking. I don't deal too well with bands that only employ that shrieking style, but when it's mixed with the clean vocals and contains catchy choruses, and well written material it works for me. I'll admit, the gruffer vocals are an aquired taste, but it is one I'm glad I've come to like. It's opened up a lot of music to me that I wouldn't have given the time of day to just a few short years ago.

I wrote a post about my top 25, and it even suprised me to see how many bands with sorta deathy, or extreme vocals that made my list. Just off the top of my head I can think of Mercenary, After Forever, Orphaned Land, Into Eternity, and Lamb Of God, and that was just my top 10.

For the record though there isn't really one true, fully death metal band that I like. The closest would be Opeth, and if it wasn't for the beautiful clean vox, I wouldn't have given it the time of day.

Yes, this is what I am talking about. You make some good points. I am not an opeth fan, however I don't mind the little bit of growling that the the Opeth singer does on the Ayreon ablum : The Human Equation . I can handle it in very small doses. However, there are times when I think it can ruin a song. I had heard a song from a band( I believe the band name was Elvin King or something like that) that was just brilliiant. It had everything I could ask for in a song. It went on for about 90% of the song with clean vocals. The song closed with these awful death metal growls that just ruined the whole thing. It just seemed so useless. Now again, in "The human equation" I believe it is Devin Townsend that plays the role of FEAR and he grunts and growls and that is okay because it fits the role he is playing and is seems to have a purpose. Again, this is just my opinion. I certainly respect everyones likes and choices. That is what I think has allowed this genre of music to grow into what is has become. Diversity is good.

Yeah, I think a growl here and there is kinda cool, but not a whole album of it. It's just like high pitched screams on power metal albums. It's cool when a singer will occasionally hit those notes, but if it's a whole album of it...

I have to agree also. I could do with out Evergray and Symphony X also for another year. If they are booked that will be OK b/c I will still go no matter what, but lets see some love given to some new bands and allow them to make an impact on the US fans. My hope's for some of the picks are;
1.Mercenary
2.Magnitude 9
3.Rob Rock & R.o.C.
4.Angra
5.Circle to Circle (b/c there is supposed to be new cd this year and past response to their PP could be a possibility.)
6.Symphorce(duh...after last year, he should be a shew in or atleast an attempt.)
7.Stratovarius(I could only hope/prey but just Kotipelto would be cool)
8.Evergrey(do the math)
9. and 10. I leave open b/c Glenn pulls something out that I dont think of so I leave them open and dont even guess......

Alright, this is kind of an update of my post earlier last year...

Persuader - This is a great band, that has everything to explode in the upcoming years!

Orphaned Land - Mabool is probably the best album of the year of 2004 along with Angra's Temple of Hate. They already said that they would play for FREE if they got the offer. For God's sake, bring them to spice up ProgPower! Plus, it would be the perfect oddball!

Masterplan - There's absolutely no better vocalist than Jorn in the world. Even Jorn solo would do!

Evergrey - Because it's the law to have them every other year. Plus, they rule!

Dragonforce - This band would set the first or second slots on fire!

Shaman - Andre Matos may be busy next year with the new album, but one show in the US wouldn't hurt.

Angra - My favorite band ever, and the new album is simply the best of the year. And, why not Angra and Shaman in the same festival?

Epica - Great band to do an earlier spot. Her vocals are great! It would be an awesome opener.

Magnitude 9 - They've canceled on us before. The guy's wife is not pregnant this year. There can't be another son coming up, so maybe he could do it this time. Bring them!

Stratovarius - They're finally back on talking terms, and there's a feeling that the band will be back. Now Glenn, it's up to you!
