Q

She was just being dumb, which is different than hating a race.

People do say a lot of racist shit without realizing, though, including people trying to stop racism. "People of color" is a term that implies all non-white people belong to a certain class. That's part of white supremacy.

But anyways, I think the contemporary definition of racism is a bit different than it used to be. There's no more "white only" drinking fountains anymore, so the offense threshold has been dropped to annoying/stupid things that can be perceived as race related like asking, "do they speak Asian in Japan?"

By all means go for racism where it appears, but I think the people obsessing over racist "micro-aggressions" are wasting their breath when the American public goes apeshit any time someone says anything racist (like that football guy. I think it was football). But finding a real issue is too much work. It's better to blog about how black pansexual transexual lesbians aren't represented enough in Lifetime movies.

Ha, I'm definitely Demi-sexual. Didn't know that was a sexuality.

Actually I do feel a lot more strongly about this than what I put out here.

Honestly people say a lot of racist shit without realizing. Last few weeks I was working on a play, and the director I've worked with her before. She is a sweet girl who claimed to be a hippie (To the point of hitting on my boyfriends mom) and super free spirited. Well, she found out her husband didn't get accepted to Yale school of drama and she was really bummed about it. She then asks me what I'm up to in regards to theatre and I told her not much just auditioning but it's hard to audition through actorsaccess because a lot of the main/interesting roles are for Caucasian or "racially ambiguous" (aka white looking Hispanic women) but i keep trying. She then tells me to apply to Yale like Lupita Nyong-o as they'll accept me because I'm black and pretty like they did with her. And they didn't accept her husband because he's white and a male.

Da fuck? Why do people think that people of color get a free fucking pass because of their color? If it really and truly was that way Ivy League schools would be 80% black/Hispanic /Asian and 20% white and not the other way around.

My ex is black and I couldn't believe some of the stories she told me about things dumbass white people said to her on a daily basis. And what was most hilarious about it was that 99% of the time they didn't realize what they were saying was incredibly offensive

For what it's worth I could also identify as demisexual as I have to know the person and make a connection before I want to actually fuck them.

Demisexual as I understand it means that the person doesn't experience sexual attraction until they've formed the emotional connection.

But anyways, I think the contemporary definition of racism is a bit different than it used to be. Are you going to sit here and outright deny that American society has an outright white bias?

As a white person, I don't have to worry if I'm ever pulled over by the police. I know that my experience with the police officer won't be made worse as a result of my race...I don't suddenly start fearing for my life as a result of a traffic stop

As a white person, I know that if a white person committed an act of terrorism that there won't be a sudden paradigm shift within our culture viewing white people as all terrorists...but HEY FUCK THEM ARABS RIGHT

Not to mention media "representations" of non-whites in America are often just walking stereotypes of their individual cultures, rather than actual representations.

By white do you mean Umericans? You know, you guys aren't the only white people in this country. I don't know whats going on in Michigan, but out here there is no such thing as white bias. Cops pull over and harass anyone and everyone here ... if anything it's worse for the caucasians, hispanics, russians, arabs etc than it is for the blacks. Most of the cops in the police departments around here are staffed with least 50% African-americans. I've been harassed by black cops far more than any other ones ... and they always seem to have some big fucking chip on their shoulders.

What about the whole Sterling issue? I don't approve of racism, but why the fuck should he lose his team and get fined several millions of dollars for saying something racist in a PRIVATE phone call? He's an asshole, no doubt, but this whole thing is going overboard. If being offensive is worth $2.5 million then I'd like to know where my paycheck is for having to hear Fred Phelps disparage the entire country of Sweden.

No. I'm just saying the culture has shifted to the point that hateful racism is frequently attacked by the masses so social justice types have to find more obscure, benign things to get offended at.

This attitude is largely disliked today. There was distrust of Arabs after 911, but that was over a decade ago. Maybe people just have a different attitude where you live. There's a decent-sized Middle Eastern population where I live and people treat them like anyone else, at least in my generation.

Not to mention media "representations" of non-whites in America are often just walking stereotypes of their individual cultures, rather than actual representations.

Americans aren't the only people to do this. It's not always easy to portray a culture that's not yours accurately.

That's because this country is hundreds of millions of people and has different regions with varying social attitudes.

Not sure if this is the right place to talk about this, but I've always had an issue with 'Married privilege.'

Married people get all kinds of benefits that single/engaged/in a relationship people don't. Isn't that some form of discrimination?

I was married when I had my son, but it didn't work out. Now that I'm divorced I get less privilege? How is that fair?

At some point there's going to be a legal battle over this after the whole LGBTA whatever etc is figured out.

But they should honestly talk about it now. Take away the 'Married privileges' and give them to all couples, hell even single people why not. Then there won't even be much reason for LGBTA whatever etc to get married. Then marriage will strictly be a title/religious issue.

I think it's a homage to the notion, whether true or not, that the societal ideal of a nuclear family is an ideal that is the proper place for children, for example, to be raised.

I haven't read many studies on this really, only some denazification bollocks.

Demisexual as I understand it means that the person doesn't experience sexual attraction until they've formed the emotional connection.

Then I think the term is greatly misused and I don't believe in the pure form of it.

Now that those are settled, Mort, what is a "gray area" and what is a "semisexual"? There's still a lot of terms that I don't understand.

do not normally experience sexual attraction, but do experience it sometimes
experience sexual attraction, but a low sex drive
experience sexual attraction and drive, but not strongly enough to want to act on them
people who can enjoy and desire sex, but only under very limited and specific circumstances

as the name implies, it refers to people whose sexuality lies somewhere in a grey area

No. I'm just saying the culture has shifted to the point that hateful racism is frequently attacked by the masses so social justice types have to find more obscure, benign things to get offended at.

It isn't about getting offended at things. It is about recognizing pervasive attitudes throughout our society and the systems that are in place to uphold these attitudes.

Racism does not have to be actively hateful to be harmful.

Why the fuck should he? Because the NBA has the obligation to its bottom line, its public image, its fans, and the other teams to uphold a certain image.

It isn't as if the government is stepping in and stripping him of anything, the league, his employers essentially, are doing this.

It would be no more different than if I said something racist on my FB account and then got fired from my job for it.

The company I work for wants to maintain a certain image, and the NBA wants to as well.

I don't see how that term implies non-whites belonging to a certain class. It's an identity-- just how white American or what have you can be an identity. The idea of not seeing color is kind of ridiculous. There's nothing wrong with seeing race and colors, it's part of who people are and how they identify themselves. The problem lies only when others take it to treat other people differently or less than because of it.

Sure, there are no more white only signs and what have you but that doesn't mean that everything is great. It's more aggravating where you live in a world and interact with people from all sorts of backgrounds and culture and with information readily available, and people still choose to be disrespectful and offensive when they really should know/understand better.

Sure there are other bigger issues but I do believe much of the "bigger issues" we have today stem from this same problem of people just not being respectful of others.

Matthias: Oh, I believe it. It's not like I get offended over everything (typically don't give a shit) but sometimes it's just too damn much and kinda hurtful when shit like that comes out of people's mouths who you thought were friendly/cool.

CyanidChrist: I see what you're saying. He said it in the privacy of his own home, and not to mention he's a senile, delusional, old guy with prostrate cancer but when your life is public like his you really gotta be careful about what you do and say. I think he should've lost his team to be honest as it's 98% black kinda ridiculous to say all of that with your team being mostly black, but the suing may be overkill.

"Privacy" is nothing more than an arbitrary distinction made according to normally accepted social institutions.

At some point, a conversation on a public street might have been considered private; but now we have intensified surveillance measures that have made that obsolete. Same with conversations in our houses, on our phones, etc.

The concept that thoughts are private will last only so long as our instruments remain incapable of "reading" those thoughts, which is already possible to some degree.

Privacy is never an absolute or essential condition. It's always only a contingent aspect of cultural and technological organization.
