Rambo, and other good movies.

T2 is still the be all and end all of action flicks ...

when i worked in electronics sales 10 years ago ... we had this on constant loop in the home theater demo room ... must have seen it hundreds of times ... and it still kicks ass.

good call on they live, lizard. classic.
does "V" count as a movie for the sake of this thread?

it's got a vaguely cheesey aspect of it that in a peculiar way enhances the story, if anything...and Carpenter is a master at pacing.

If any of you vunts haven't seen this, pick up a six pack and rent it.

Zod: agreed on T2. T1 was also a landmark.

Stallone playing Rocky in 2006 = Ozzy fronting Sabbath in 2005.

No way man, Stallone, unlike Arnold, is still a fucking beast. Plus Ozzy is pretending he is still the old ozzy, while Stallone's new Rocky is going to be in the right timeline with his age.

is this going to be another movie where stallone gets the snot beat out of him and then reaches deep within his inner being and marshalls the reserves of never-say-die-ism and then storms back for the victory??

I think the acutal plot is based on the heavyweight champ wanting to pull an "Apollo Creed" and give a retired "Rocky" a shot at the title. Sounds like the Rocky I plot retreaded in a major way.

I hope not. I mean, that's what I hated in Rocky. He gets beaten up so bad, no one would be able to keep standing after that.

That's what I actually loved about the flavor of the Rocky I movie - his heart and determination to not fail because he wanted so badly to be respected by those he loves. The title meant nothing to him, but going the distance meant everything to him. Great acting, great script and I thought the ending was just superb.

although it was a total string of cliches, it was very well done, good story, good direction, and it got you involved emotionally. from there it was a steady downhill run for stallone.

Formulaic? Perhaps - but I don't think him losing at the end was a cliche riddled moment.

I wholeheartedly agree about the stallone downhill run though. But First Blood was certainly a quality film, as was Nighthawks. I really enjoyed Copland as well.

I even enjoyed Cobra! and yeah, First Blood is a classic of sorts. Stallone is a decent enough actor in limited circumstances, i.e., action films. but like every guy who gets a taste of acting success, they start wanting to prove they are a "serious" actor "practicing their craft" and they go well beyond their capabilities.

it happened with him, it happened with Schwarzenegger.

that said, if you were going to build a film library of the classic action movies of all time, you'd have to include:

Rocky 1
First Blood
Predator
They Live
Conan
Full Metal Jacket
Saving Private Ryan
T1
T2

In general I agree with you, but did you ever see Copland? I actually thought he portrayed that character very well.

Agreed - though I would limit Conan to just the "Barbarian" film thanks in large part to James Earl Jones' portrayal of Thulsa Doom and Schwarzenegger's seriousness in the role. "Destroyer" was enjoyable enough, but too dumbed down warrant being included on a list of mandatory action films.
