Well I have to second Dissection, I absolutely love that band and I think the singer, Jon, was a great musician and like vuashke said, they also have some cool acoustic pasasges as well. To get into them I would recommend downloading/buying their dvd rebirth of dissection, its absolutely brilliant and I think, a good way to get into the band.

Satyricon is also pure awesomeness. A two man band that hire session musicians when they play live . The drummer, frost, is most likely one of the best black metal drummers out there, perhaps even one of the best extreme metal drummers in general? he is insanely fast and has a very good rhythm both at fast and slow pace. I'd recommend Nemesis divina, volcano and now diabolical

Frost is a beast, but the drummer in DsO totally domirapes him out of this world.

Huzzah! Someone else who noticed that DsO blatantly loved VBE!

Pretty much look out for avant-garde or experimental 'black metal' bands.. They're generally far more interesting than traditional bm..

written in water's is such a blatant influence on late DsO. what can i say except that they're a great group to draw influence from. i can also see some VBE influence in akercocke.

weird dissonant arpeggio's over chanting, i don't exactly know what it is but it owns.
