Can anyone recommend any stuff that is similar to the acoustic bits from early In Flames songs - not metal with folk bits, but actual folk. It doesn't have to be associated with metal in any way.

The thing is, when I try finding folk music, it all ends up being what I guess is like American Indie Folk. Neofolk is different too. When I try finding actual traditional European music it's also different. So, I'm lost.

Ensiferum and Tyr have very much Folk influences and melodies, and not all songs are ''metal'', but I'm sure you've heard of those bands.

Thanks, but yeah, I've heard them. Like you say: "Folk influences and melodies." So the folk music must exist to inspire this kind of music, I'm just having a hard time tracking some down.

Yes, I was once on this quest. Many years ago, after I first discovered the work of the Swedish masters. Sadly, your quest will mostly end in tears. The dark dramatic tone you're looking for seems to be native to Scandinavia, so most world folk that you find is more upbeat. I trust that you can use YouTube, so search for these and see what you can find:

Spanish folk (maybe search "spanish guitar")
Celtic folk

Malaguena Salerosa:

Acoustic Alchemy - Wind of Change:

Also, this might be way out of what you're looking for, but my search for the dark tonal magic led me to the Canadian ambient scene.

Try this song at 7:00 (listen to everything they've ever done, but especially that):

Or this one around 2:00:

I would be remiss if I did not also include the band that slaughtered my innocence, Set Fire to Flames:

Steal Compass, Drive North, Disappear

And of course, Love Song for 15 Ontario.

Frankly, if you're just looking for one man, one guitar, you may never really find what you're looking for. I know that I did not. Over time, however, the search for magic in any genre which matched that of Dark Tranquillity and old In Flames led me to these. They're probably not exactly what you're looking for, but they may help if you give them each a serious consideration.

Happy Listening!

Thanks for all the recommendations. I wanted the music for a long drive in the car. Coincidentally, we started singing the Bard's Song on the drive, before I had seen that reply.

I really like The Dead Flag Blues, and some of that Borknagar album.

If anyone else is interested in more folky stuff:

Ulver - Kveldssanger (though Bergtatt is my favorite album of all time, kveldssanger has more folk elements)
Empyrium
Agalloch - White EP (though everything they've done is fantastic)
October Falls
Nest
Vali
Tenhi

still nothing quite like In Flames acoustic bits
