releases 2008!

I noticed that none of you mentioned any hip hop albums in this thread. Not sure if you guys are into hip hop, but if you want to start, grab this album immediately:

Came out last year. As far as I am concerned, this is quite possibly the greatest hip hop album since Wu Tang's 36 Chambers (another mandatory record).

So the new Zonaria is out. It is an interesting listen. Still forming opinions about the band, but they have some pretty heavy/epic/creative moments on this one. Titled "The Cancer Empire". Any thoughts?

I'm kind of pissed it leaked when it did because their label didn't get to even announce the street date or any other info about the CD beforehand. Those are good, hardworking guys (not to mention friends of mine) that did not deserve that. Overall it's a great album, and a definite step up from IATB.

I am indeed into hip hop, however I have unfortunately not listened to any new stuff from this year that I like. I have the new Immortal Technique but I haven't listened yet. I am a big fan of Revolutionary vol. 1 and 2, but that's all I've listened to.

Download that Aesop Rock album dude. It is phenomenal beyond words.

The new IT is very good, but it's not as good as Revolutionary vol. 1 and 2. I heard there's gonna be a new Cage album which I want to check out.

haha i havent heard ANY of the albums in this thread aside from a few scattered tracks. got lots of 'new' stuff this year, pretty much none from 08 though haha.

Sleep - Dopesmoker (not 2008)

one 63 minute track of heavy, lumbering, stoner riffage, psychedelic solos,
and tidbits of wisdom such as the one below\/

Someone crucify me. I'm listening to the new Trivium and as much as I hate his vocals at all times, this music is pretty damn creative. Fuck me...

edit: Ummmm HOLY FUCK. Seriously did someone be like "Matt your songs are gay" and he was like "OK I'll make them metal and cool"? Jesus was not expecting this. Still gay choruses and his terrible screams but this really is way beyond their previous records (which I despised)

Haha I don't know if I'd call him "creative", cause the first song has a pretty blatant Morbid Angel riff and the single has some Katatonia (although most likely accidental) worship in there. What I will say is that I definitely agree with you. Overall the riffs in this album are great but the vocals are horrible. This is also the best production they've ever gotten too. Last 2 albums sounded completely sterile and fake, but this time around drums sound like real drums and guitars sound like guitars.

Oh and please excuse me if I sound retarded in this post. I gots a bad cold :(

Well folks, a certain album leaked that completely wiped out everything that made my day shitty: Cynic - Traced In Air.

Album. Of. The. Year.

Interesting question and one that is impossible to answer haha. They started out as a death metal band in the early 90s and their debut 'Focus' ended up becoming this weird progressive metal album with lots of jazz influence and vocoder vocals. The new album doesn't move away too far from where focus left off except it is a bit darker and more atmospheric and the songs are a bit shorter.

new Gojira leaked on saturday and ive been listening to that at least 2-3 times a day, some days more. brutal, heavy, groovy, catchy, awesome!! they've taken it all to the next level, album of the year for me so far, and i really dont see that changing. need to check out the new cynic, but i doubt it'll top Gojira or Colour Haze, regardless of robot vocals :kickass:

Well I'm up in Boston hunting down my first apartment, and for my road trip I took along a few of the CDs you fellows have recommended.

I'd heard Scar Symmetry's name tossed around a bit but hadn't ever listened to them. I like Holographic Universe...and yet I don't think it's a spectacularly strong album. As I was listening I thought besides the first song, the first half of the CD is kind of weak. It picks up a lot near the end. My two favorites are certainly Morphogenesis and Ghost Prototype II.

I hate to say it, Aeonic..but I don't think I like Per Nilsson very much. :ill: He's good, a really technically solid player..there just weren't any solos that blew me away, though. (Maybe I'm just not listening to the right cd, though)

I like some hip-hop - so I tried Aesop Rock. Some interesting stuff, though I think I need to do a second run-through...I think I liked the title track best of all of them. (Aesop: try looking up Wiz Khalifa. He might not be up your alley, but his song "History In The Making" has been stuck in my head for oh...9 months now. "Say Yeah" is also stupidly catchy)

I also listened to Lady Gaga's "The Fame" ...which is just a bunch of dance-y pop stuff. Not bad for sugary fluff though. "Just Dance" is the one that people might have heard.

Holographic Universe was really good imo, but I'm not sure if it would make a great entry point for SS. You should definitely check out Pitch Black Progress. As for Nilsson... man his solos are so tasty haha I dunno.

Oh and did you call me Aesop?!

So I've spun the new Gojira album a few times now. Fucking nice. Brutal, groovy, keeps the pace, WIN. 2008 has seen some great stuff thus far! I checked out Cynic - Traced in Air. Not exactly my cup of tea with the vocal approach, but I really like the music and it's been growing on me. Very different.

I originally posted this disappointment in my first post, but I've come to the realization that a few of the bands that got me into metal have, in my mind, formed their own category entitled "I could care less what these guys do next AKA fallen off the FUCKING radar". You know when your favorite bands have been plummetting, then they have one shot at their next record, fail on every level, and now are basically meaningless to keep track of? For me, The Haunted really have dropped the ball with Versus (not to mention The Dead Eye). Peter Dolving needs to be fired. Hell I'd rather have Matt Heafy up on the mic. Dolving ruined Versus and their direction is just terrible. In Flames also is a joke now as well. So can we start the WRGAFA (Who Really Gives a Fuck Anymore?) category? I will begin:

1) In Flames
2) The Haunted

That is true, though, a lot of old bands that got me into metal are either disbanded, dead, committed suicide, or in unknown status. But I think a lot of the old good ones still around just aren't as militantly awesome as they were to be put on the radar. It can still be done though.

As far as metal is concerned, the only two bands that continue to put out quality release after quality release as far as I am concerned are Nevermore and Symphony X. Not only are these bands consistent, and extremely talented, but they also mix things up and try new things without deviating too far from their core sound. It's an impossible task to pull off while maintaining longevity, but these two bands manage to do it. The only other band imo that would have come close was Death but yeah.
