What was your first reaction when you heard that Opeth switched over to RR and how did you feel about them after Ghost Reveries came out. Did your opinions change?

i thought "king diamond? cynic? sepultura? disincarnate? deicide? obituary? suffocation? opeth...theyre finally home".

Never was an issue. besides, how does a band that never "bought in"...actually "sell out?" please, theyve always done their own thing.

The worst thing that has happened to Opeth.

Besides Steven Wilson, of course.

WTF?
Opeth used to sound like every other Swedish DM band. Twin guitar harmonies with growls and clean guitar interludes... very revolutionary in the early/mid nineties in Sweden.

i think that if gr was released on nuclear blast or century media, it would be a much better album.
It probably would have been much better (received). I couldn't care less about what label they're on though. Roadrunner have got the album out everywhere (I actually haven't seen anything but GR available in the CD shops I've been to in the last 6 months), which I suppose is great news for Opeth. And since the album was recorded before they signed (if I'm not mistaken), RR had nothing to do with the content. Though it's my least favourite Opeth album, I wouldn't doubt for a second that it's the next step Mikael wanted to take. It almost reeks of 70s prog influence in places, and (to me) seems more of a prog album than a metal one.

Yes but not with 13 mins long songs and 4 min acoustic passages where the members dressed like hippys

were talking about record labelwise and pressure therein dumb dumb.
Wow!
They sure have done their own thing 'record labelwise'!
Kudos to Opeth!

i'll answer with a mikael akerfeldt sentence:
"fuck the people, they think we're [like] metallica, but we're not. fucking far from metallica!!!"

in case you still don't understand:
1.ROADRUNNER SIMPLY IS A FUCKING LABEL WHO DISTRIBUTES RECORDS AROUND THE WORLD
2.OPETH WILL ALWAYS PLAY THE MUSIC THEY WANT TO PLAY, LIKE IT OR NOT
3.OPETH NOW CAN JUST LIVE PLAYING THE MUSIC THEY LOVE, BUT THIS DOESN'T MEAN THEY'RE MAINSTREAM. CHRISTINA AGUILERA IS MAINSTREAM, OPETH IS NOT.
4.IF YOU DON'T LIKE GR OR ANY OTHER OPETH LP YOU'RE FREE TO TELL THAT TO THE WORLD, BUT DON'T TELL OPETH HOW SHOULD THEY PLAY.

no, but i believe in what they do. and i talked to mikael himself.
in their very first interviews [orchid-era i mean] mikael used to say that they were honest. i think that after 10+ years they still are, and this attitude reflects in their music.
think before saying that GR is a sell-out album.
and of course, mikael said many times that only opeth decide how their music sounds, also on this forum.

read an interview that's been out in the last year or so and see what they say themselves. they really don't care about the lable - they're only using RR for their selling power.

so you've never seen a band switch to a major label and then the music starts sucking?

and please point out the part where I said that Ghost Reveries is a sellout album. because I must have missed that.

well, that was just to fix some points... people often come here saying 'sorry if this has been discussed before' or something like that.
of course there's many bands who started sucking with a major. but there's many people here who thought for example that GR would suck from the 1st day they knew opeth signed to RR. don't want to accuse you, it's just a general consideration.

Ghost Reveries is one of my favorite albums by them.

it's like when Lamb of God switched over to Epic, I had mixed feelings and was worried about how the new album would turn out but then they proved me wrong when it was released.
