Heres an often uncovered topic. Is anyone into RPG's at all and if so what are your favorites?

:D

Depends, depends...

On the fantasy side, my current favorite is Praedor, a Finnish fantasy RPG set in a very different kind of world (Finnish speakers check out this link). Other good ones are RuneQuest and MERP, with RQ taking 1st place for its realistic low-fantasy combat. The magic system in RQ is crap but we've got our own, so that don't matter :)

My favorite present/near-future games are Cyberpunk 2020 (number one with some tweaking and intelligent GM'ing), Shadowrun and Twilight 2000 2nd ed (kudos to the T:2k v2 crew for keeping the realism but making combat playable ;-) ). I've got the d20 version of Star Wars, and I think that's got potential too. It's just that class based character advancement schemes never appealed to me.. but I haven't really managed to get any interested players for SW.

I just realized that I've assumed that you meant tabletop games. Oh well, my bad (if indeed it is one)

But hey, what about your favorites?

Oh no!! I mean all RPG's in general:) table top, Online, Console based. Table top im kinda old school as to some of my favorites I started in regular D&D and into AD&D. Online ive just been given the opportunity to beta test Final Fantasy online, May do it, May not, Everquest is pretty cool but theres lots of good online games popping up right and left. Some people like the online stuff alot, Dont blame them:D Console based? Well just about all i can get my hands on for the PS2 and Xbox.:p Sounds like you have alot of really good picks there though :) Good answers!!

From fantasy it would be Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play, I love the world, though the game system is not too great. I'm currently GMing it online (through chat) and traditionally. Also one of the best and least known systems is Everway, but it requires a imaginative and witty GM to get anything out of it. I've been planning to get Praedor, but I'm too busy with WFRP at the moment.

On the scifi-side there's nothing like the modified Cyberpunk 2020 my friend GMed and is still developing (it has grown so much out from the original, it has barely nothing to do with it anymore except the genre). Fading Suns is also great, the world has resources for any kind of campaign.

The best CRPG would be Baldur's Gate saga and/or Arcanum. I'm currently playing Arcanum and it's great, but I hope it stays great. The problem with CRPG's tends to be the constant fighting. I haven't bothered with online games, because I don't really trust the quality of play there. Hack'n'slashing and power playing put me off faster than old naked men.

Damn, I was gonna mention WFRP too, but I forgot. I've played that too, and enjoyed it quite a lot. It has lots of opportunities for powerful characters (like my current one, a crusader and a bad assed military leader :) ), which is a nice change since I often play quite low-level ones.

Heh, I've actually never been a player in WFRP, but I've GMed it since '96.... I'm growing a bit tired with the career based system, if the player is not playing wizard, priest, or other levelled career and the career exits are not controlled by GM, it's sure that when the campaign is getting nearer it's conclusion (=lot of xp gained) there's bunch of assassins, outlaw chiefs, elven wardancers and mercenary captains in the party, whatever their origins might've been. I've been thinking of converting the system to D20 (which is pretty objective and comprehensive) , to Fading Suns rules (which I like very much) or maybe create my own set of rules (which would take eternity to get them balanced and working)...

Oh, and to mention two games I forgot, this would be the humor game genre: Og and Violence. First one is a caveman game, where the characters have 17 word vocabulary. Great game after 18 hour marathon with some more serious game, even though the "adventures" usually end when somebody gets eaten by "fast-fast-hairy-bang" (cheetah) or something similar. :D
Violence is described on the cover: "roleplaying game of egregious and repulsive bloodshed" and considering the five characterics characters have (Strenght, Threshold of Pain, Constitution, Intimidation and Everything Else), I think it speaks for itself. The rulebooklet is worth a read even if you're never going to play the game, just for the laughs. Also very good game after more serious games. Especially after intrigue filled gamesessions the brainless bloodshed is just relaxing...

For us the career system in WFRP has worked pretty well... but we aren't a bunch of rampant muchkins.. at least we like to think so ;-)

Hey VoG, have you ever played "Miekka ja Magia" (lit. "Sword and Sorcery")? We have, once or twice, and that was worth a laugh or two :) For those not in the know, it's a sort of parody on the quintessential dungeon romp.

Another interesting gaming experience was one time we were holed up at a friends cabin in the woods.. we had been boozing for the previous day, then we began to play this schitzophrenia-game one of the guys had created. The point was that multiple players (both men and women) played the same character, although they all exhibited different -- and often extreme -- personalities... It was fun as a one-off, at least.

@Ziller: Praedor seems very interesting, now if I only could find someone to play it with...

I have played only Cyberpunk 2020, D&D and Kerp. And none of those for almost five years, 'cause all my friends that would play RPG are nowadays spreaded all over Finland.

@Ziller: I've never played M&M (eaten them, yes :) ), and yes some of my current players tends to be a bit munchkin, but I'll let that happen for now. It's their first WFRP campaign anyway....

@Torgoth: Our old group is also spread all over Finland, but we all luckily have internet, so we play online through NetMeeting. If your pals have net, it's worth a shot. Pretty slow, but the playing is concentrated on role-playing when the game mechanics are hidden to the GM's end.

Hehe, my first ever role-play game was Games Workshop's HeroQuest :headbang:, than Advanced HeroQuest and D&D came along, then RuneQuest (and the magic system DOES suck). I haven't done any online or computer-based RPGs, but I play a little Warhammer Fantasy Battle and Necromunda if they count. Although I don't play at all now that both of my brothers have moved away.

Ive played a couple of different RPGs, but I still find D&D to be the best one among the bunch.

There is nothing better than sitting down with a couple of friends and set out to slay a dragon :D

Just yesterday I played D&D for nearly 12 hours strait.

Used to love AD&D with pencil and paper, but it's hard to find the time and/or people to play it with anymore. Baldur's Gate made for a great substitute on the computer, and now I'm getting into Neverwinter Nights (although the 3rd edition rules have taken some getting used to...)

Well, got into D&D in the late 70's, then in the mid 80's got into Arduin and some serious 1st Ed AD&D, a while later some Gamma World, Twilight 2000, then Warhammer RPG.

Haven't played in MANY MANY years.

I still have all my AD&D characters.

I can see that D&D might be a bit hard to get at first, especially when you are as young as 11, if you try it now, Im sure you will get alot more out of it and hours and hours of fun.

My favorite RPGs are the ones on the SNES (Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger...), and the PSX/PS2 ones are good, just not as good as the SNES ones...

I haven't played any D&D though, just the console or computer RPGs.

hey, I started out with Hero Quest, too! I was like 8. Then we advanced to playing "Hero quest" with lego-men on boards we made ourselves. It got really cool (We were like 10) and when I was 13 or 14 I started playin' ad&d. AD&D is my definite favorite, but I'm playing Icewind Dale 2 and Arcanum on the computer now, anticipating the MMORPGS Darkfall Online and the Wheel of Time MMORPG. MMORPG fans should check'um out, and WoT fans should definitely check out the WoT rpg.. It's just getting started and needs a supportive community :p
