So what are "straight edge" people exactly?

I've heard it was "hardcore dancing"...basically punch and kick anything and everything around you.

I really don't understand these straight edge people. I've encountered 'em on forums and read interviews with bands that follow the idea...they come across as rather self-rightious, kind of like those bible-bashers that are so stuck up their own arses they fail to see just how deluded they are.

Smoking...well, it's an inevitable by-product of growing up. Everyone I know smokes, even my mate's 12 year old sister (and nearly everyone I know comes from good, stable families). Drinking...man, nobody should deny themselves drinkage! Meat...well that's just retarded. We're top of the food chain, y'know, don't try and deny it! And what can beat a nice fat kebab after a night of drinkage?

So, straight-edge ain't for me at all. So don't try and force it on me with violence, or I will jump on your head, no matter how much crappy hardcore you listen to.

And if any of those Turks try laying a finger of any of our lads, we'll cut their fucking throats! They're just jealous cos they're inferior :p

we already saw who cut whose throats when there was a fight two years ago, so now please shut up...

I've been to shows where these so-called "straight-edgers" tried to show their stuff. At the Tool/Tomahawk show I went to there was even a guy their trying to start stuff in the mosh pit (there shouldn't even be a mosh pit at Tool). Anyway, me and some other guys were getting pissed when he took off his boots and held them in his hands as he started spinning and hitting people in the head. As soon as a female got hit, I took it upon myself (being a large bodybuilder type - 6'2", 225lbs.) to stop his bitch ass. I kicked him in the middle of the back so hard he threw up. He was done for the night.

I've seen other straight-edgers at Shadows Fall, In Flames, etc. In Kansas they went to any concert with distorted guitars. They always tried to start shit, and they always got the shit kicked out of them.

Real straight-edgers don't believe in that violence stuff. Jake Bannon of Converge has a really good article that he wrote for a major magazine concerning straight-edge. I wish I could find it again. He hates the straight-edgers that are violent toward others. He says it's against everything straight-edge originally stood for. He doesn't associate with the straight-edge lifestyle anymore.

I say the NY straight-edgers will kick the shit out of the Slayer fans. Why? Because the Slayer fans will all be drunk.

I've always wanted to go to one of those straightedge shows and offer to buy a beer to everyone in the place...of course, the near-certain possibility of getting my ass kicked in the process has prevented me from realizing that particular fantasy.

This is my first Slayer show in NY. It'll be interesting to see the variety of fans that show up. I doubt if there'll be any trouble as such, but I can imagine the intensity.

Sounds like at Slayer shows recently, the entire audience becomes the mosh pit.

some interesting background here: http://65.108.164.40/article_straght%20edge%20kills_2.html

someone above mentioned Ian McKaye (sp) from Minor Threat, and then Fugazi. you were right.

someone also above mentioned its part of being accepted into a group with a vague philosophy and feeling better about yourself because of that acceptance. Also, when you're in a pack mentality you will do more extreme things than you would ever do on your own.

The trouble with validating your own self worth by becoming part of a group is that it is an artificial thing, you aren't fixing the root cause of the problem. Plus, even within one of these groups there will always be different levels of "coolness", and how much do you give up of yourself to ingratiate yourself further into the collective?

Trust a Yank to stick his nose in foreign affairs when it's not wanted. You love Turks so much, go live with 'em. We'll kick your ass once we're done with theirs

Bloody interesting article, lizard, I'm giving it a shuftis now...

Or a Brit who's betrayed his kind. Both thoughts crossed my mind. I couldn't give a toss either way, to be honest, it's only the internet :loco:

Shuftis? I'm giving you a yellow card for using British slang I don't understand.
Shuftis = look. Think we got that one from the Egyptians ^_^

'Red Coats'? That's a new one. I always hear 'Beefeater', heh. I still think 'Limey' is the best though.

Denis Farina in Snatch is perfect for that reason.
