I've heard this group mentioned a ton on this forum and though I know they're not metal... I still don't know what they ARE. European folk or what exactly and what makes them so great? What's their best album?

They're not easy to pin down. They combine aspects of various types of ethnic and traditional music with classcal instrumentation, musical influences from the renaissance, and some other contemporary influences that aren't really rigidly definable. It's not fair to attribute some specific genre tag to them. If you want to know why people think they're so great then I suggest you try downloading some of their albums. I think their best album is Aion but another good one that's a little bit more accessible is Within the Realm of a Dying Sun. Spleen and Ideal has some great moments as well, as does The Serpent's Egg.

Don't forget the (self-titled) debut album. It suffers a little from the typical slightly flat sounding 80's production, but it has some excellent tracks on it. Like "The Trial", or everything really.

I will be seeing this band on the 21st of this month. I am really excited. I hope they play a lot of material from Aion.

Heard a few songs, forgot how they sound. I think i'm going to download some more. They have a wicked cool name by the way. "Dead Can Dance" GENIUS!

yeah Dead Can Dance- self titled album is my favorite, i think the production on it adds to the atmosphere, all their albums are great, amazing and well accomplished musicians, very creative and dynamic, definitely buy some of their stuff, its worth the money for sure

You can (pre-)order double-CDs of some of their upcoming concerts (though not the one you will attend) here. I ordered double-CDs of their shows in The Hague and Colgone (I attended the latter myself) earlier this year. The songs they played at these two shows were nearly the same (don´t know about the other European dates though), though the running order was slightly different. The songs they played in Cologne were:

1. Nierika (Spirit Chaser)
2. Saffron
3. Yamyinar
4. The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove (Into The Labyrinth)
5. The Love That Cannot Be
6. The Lotus Eaters (CD no. 3 of "1981-1998"-box)
7. Crescent
8. Minus Sanctus
9. Saltarello (Aion)
10. The Wind That Shakes The Barley (Into The Labyrinth)
11. How Fortunate The Man With None (Into The Labyrinth)
12. Dreams Made Flesh
13. I Can See Now (Toward The Within)
14. American Dreaming (Toward The Within)
15. Sanvean (Lisa Gerrard´s solo debut "The Mirror Pool")
16. Rakim (Toward The Within)
17. Black Sun (Aion)
18. Salem´s Lot
19. Yulunga (Into The Labyrinth)
20. Severance (The Serpent´s Egg)
21. Hymn For The Fallen (new song)

(Mentioned in parentheses are the albums on which the songs were first released. As you can see, they played quite a lot of new songs.)
