some help on metal bands

a disclaimer, I know there have already been about 483001 posts almost identical to this one, but I was hoping you guys could recommend some good bands for me - low on cash and a bad internet hunter, so I hate having to just try and listen to any band I hear mention of. Metallica and Opeth share my favorite band spot, I also like Meshuggah, Katatonia, and of course Bloodbath, as well as most southern metal (Down, COC, BLS). Any help you'd like to offer would be awesome. Thanks.

buy any Opeth, you can't really go wrong
metallica - S&M and Master Of Puppets are also good
also wait for Opeth - Damnation to come out

just download a few tracks from various albums and see which one's you like before buying, you cant go wrong that way

good advice, i guess i wasn't clear though (my fault). i own the back catalogues to all the bands i mentioned, looking for some other bands to get into. thanks though (and excellent taste, by the way)!

Southern metal? Man, you can't go wrong with Eyehategod...some people (OK, a lot of people) don't dig 'em, but from what you say it sounds like you'd love 'em.

Soilent Green are in the same vein, but a little more inspired by black metal.

Also, something tells me you need some Carcass in your life...

Some of S&M is decent...some of it shit...

If you want some really special music, check out Isis and Neurosis. Also check out Porcupine Tree, a softer Pink Floyd'ish act based on Steven Wilson who has worked extensively with Opeth on their last albums. Also, don't forget to check out Edge of Sanity, one of Swedens finest Death Metal bands who also have some history together with Opeth.

Yep he sure was.

Oh yea and some other bands that I like that you should check out are, Immortal and Arch Enemy. I can't think of too many though because a lot of really amazing bands have already been mentioned. If you are into hardcore or metalcore at all though check out December, Skycamefalling, From Autumn to Ashes and Poision the Well.

For southern metal, it may be hard to find, but you must check out 60 Watt Shaman if you like southern metal. They are excellent.

I would suggest Agalloch, VinterSorg, Green Carnation, Borknagar if you like the style of Opeth.

Old In Flames too, not the new garbage they put out. Pick up Whoracle, I still love that album.
