ProgPower USA gig cancellation - Statement from the band
Share

Statement from the band:

As you may have already found out, TURISAS have been forced to cancel their scheduled appearance at ProgPower USA XI Festival on 10 September. The reason for this is changes beyond our control to the album production schedule, which in turn has radically changed our planned touring schedule for 2010. This meant that ProgPower, instead of being a great way to kick off a US tour, would have ended up being a one-off show. The band simply could not afford to fly over from Helsinki and back for one festival.

Having spent then a week trying to find a realistic way to get round this and still make the show happen (but without success), the management and booking agency had to make the hard decision to cancel. To make matters worse, there were then some communication problems which meant that the promoter did not find out what was going on nearly as soon as he should have.

The band is sincerely sorry about it all, first for having to cancel the gig, and second for the poor communication about the changed schedule. Everybody in the Turisas camp was excited about appearing at ProgPower USA and kicking off a US tour in September, and we're sorry for not being able to make it there as planned. Apologies go to all of you who wanted to see us at the festival as well as anyone who made the "blind sponsorship bids" for this festival gig, and of course the promoter and festival organizers who work hard to put these bills together in the first place.

We fully intend to make up for this mess in the near future - we WILL be back in the States very soon and will make sure nothing like this happens again.

Translation...

Having poorly scheduled the recording of our album, and having no way to work around that in a way that wouldn't inconvenience us, we've decided to break the contract we signed. Finally, it wasn't us, but our management company who made this decision, so don't blame us.

Everyone knows the only legitimate reason for breaking a contract is because you've been offered a tour with Disturbed. :loco:

If we made a list of bands that have cancelled tours due to changes in schedule for recording an album, we might just have the longest thread in the history of this site.

Well, at least they made a statement instead of ignoring the issue. Hard to say who slowed up the production of the album. Certainly could have been the band, but scheduling with the other entities involved is often complicated. Whatever, having flown to Helsinki four times, I appreciate the expense. Can't even imagine what the excess baggage costs. Just hope they haven't burned their bridges.

These bands say how expensive it'd be for a one-off, how do these other bands come over with 5-6 people who are less popular for a one off too?

Some, with label support.

Some, hope to make up the difference on merch sales.

Some, knowingly lose money, but do it either to do it, or with hopes that it pays off down the road.

WHAT!>! are you serious?

and that seems like a great translation :)

I can't imagine a label not supporting a band trying to appear at this festival, even for a one off. I guess, logically, Turisas having 'successfully' toured here for Paganfest might be a different story.

Some, hope to make up the difference on merch sales.

I guess that makes sense but I don't recall any bands having specific merch tables beyond Evergrey and Elvenking. TBH though, I don't typically pay attention.

That's a good point, sometimes, I forget that fun is a factor in putting on a show and doing what they love.

For people who claim to "totally understand how the biz works" many of you are missing a LOT of key points:

1) Turisas NEVER booked this show as a special one-off appearance.

2) This show was to be a kick-off for their US tour. Therefore, Glenn was paying for their performance / rider guarantee, NOT for the flight over

3) Sure, you might say that it would be worth it for them to come over, but they have been to the US and WILL be back. I don't think you can compare their situation to other bands who may have paid their own way who would be playing for the first time.

4) There are MANY members of this band. Add in crew, and you might be pushing 10+ people to fly over.

5) They stated their recording got pushed back. Therefore, they might literally be IN the studio during Prog Power weekend. Don't know for sure obviously, but could be a possibility.

6) Bands cancel for FAR lamer reasons than this. This is a legitimate reason for the band not starting their US tour at this time. People are saying "What about label support?" They probably WILL get label support, for when they do come back for a US tour. As Zod said, it's not like they bailed out because of a better offer, they simply will NOT be in the States at this time, and it is for a good reason......... their recording!!!!

Yes, this stinks for ALL involved, but I still feel the band is 100% justified in their no longer being able to make it. It sounds like there were MAJOR communication issues, which is really the only valid beef with this situation. Though that is Glenn's issue, which I think many of you are taking personally out on the band (who really wouldn't be the one to have control over getting the message back to Glenn, it would be their management / booking agent).

Just my 2 cents from one of this forums favorite (subject to who you ask) armchair commentator!!! :)

Pretty much nailed it on the head here. People have the right to be pissed they aren't coming, but honestly they shouldn't blame the band itself. It just sounds to me they have some management that are a little bit unorganized.

Very good points, Jasonic! Also, I think Glenn explained a few months ago about the zoo called US Immigration with all the time, trouble and expenses related to apply and get work visas from them. Turisas must have been making serious plans for months to hit the road with their mint CD at PP in September. Just something happened which genuinely forced to postpone the CD release date. And when no new CD - no tour...
