Yes,Makarska,Istra and islands are all right,but avoid Dubrovnik cause it full of tourists and mostly older ones.I definitely suggest Istra.More precisely town Rovinj.Croatia has some great wines so in case you are going there dont forget to try it.

I was thinking about Hvar and the island next to it, which looks awesome. Any good?

I was there in 2006 or something.Hvar is great and in August full of Italians but too expensive for me.(but i dont think it would be expensive for you) Avoid Old Town cause its more for families and go to town Hvar cause nightlife is much better there.Trust me,you wont regret anyway
