Stoner Rock for the Summer -- any recommendations?

Wolfmother :kickass:
I won't say 10/10 but this is at least an 8

Yeah, very few CDs make the 10/10 mark, but considering the absolute trollope that's out there, an 8/10 is rare too.

I agree with you about the :kickass: , and I'll raise you a :headbang:

Goddamn you guys, I'm gonna have to relisten to this Wolfmother since you're not shutting up

Plus best buy is selling it for 7.99! how nuts is that!?

It's rifftastic! 9.94 at target. Their label is really trying to break them big.

I can see the "vocals are weak" perspective, but only if you're one of those guys who thinks all singers should sound like garbage disposals. The lyrics are a little underdeveloped tho, but then comes more rocking to push that thought away. Also, there are some really interesting production touches

For ten dollars it's really not much of a risk

Just fucking get this or die.

Honcho - Corporate Rock
Hangnail - Clouds In The Head & Tens Days Before Summer
House of Aquarius - The World Through Bloodred Eyes
Madking Ludwig - s/t
Obiat - Emotionally Driven Disturbance
Spiritual Beggars - On Fire, Ad Astra
Unida - El Coyote
Colour Haze - ANYTHING
The Rubes - Hokum
Dead Meadow - s/t
Brant Bjork - Jalamanta

yada yadda

...a lot of so called "stoner rock" is just down-tuned straight ahead hard rock.

im bored, so my recs:

Spiritual Beggars - all
Monster Magnet - Dopes to Infinity, Spine of God
Clutch - s/t, Robot Hive/Exodus, Pure Rock Fury, Elephant Riders, Blast Tyrant
Alabama Thunderpussy - Rise Again, River City Revival
Grand Magus - s/t

Checking out Wolfmother's myspace right now and I'm thinking they sound pretty great.

Dimension has a lot of Sabbath in the riffs and even some of the vocals, which obviously rules if you're me. And I am.

edit: oh what the hell, back to the Stoner Rock thing. I don't put much weight in this category either. the reason I'll defend the term is thaht the website Stonerrock.com and the associated store has gotten me in touch with so many amazing albums, and the fact that they are grouped together under one category means that this category is relevant to me. regardless of whether many of these bands predate the term itself, the way the Stoner Rock community chooses to define them has allowed me to experience them while I may not have been able otherwise. I'm sure you'll excuse me for taking exception to people saying "I hope some day everyone sees how stupid this label is" when it clearly has value to myself and more than a few others, including many, many bands!

Yeah, "stoner rock" is whatever I happen to reach for when I'm baked out of my gourd
