To make a long story short, my father passed away a few days ago and he had a fairly large music collection (CD's, tapes and LP's). I intend on keeping every single bit of it, being somewhat of a collector myself but I can't see my revisiting them after I rip them to my hard drive and whatnot. My question to you all is simply the best way to preserve everything? Cold dry spaces? Ziplock bags? I figured I'd ask the professionals and see which road is best!

1) Sorry to hear about your loss.
2) Everything survives best in cool dry places. My father moved thousands his LPs to his basement and due to the volume they kept in good form on the shelves. I have pulled some out and brought down here to NC with me and they are in pristine condition. If they are going to sit somewhere untouched plastic bags aren't really necessary for ones that are already in good condition all these years later. the key is atmosphere they are kept in.

That's incredibly comforting to hear right now. They're pretty much in the ideal setting right now and I was worried they wouldn't hold up too well against time. Thank you for putting my mind at ease on this subject

I meant to follow up on this and say, his stuff from late 70's and onward was in good shape. His stuff from the 60's however definitely shows it's age sleeve wise, but still vinyl is in good shape. My father has never used plastic sleeves for anything except his original Beatles stuff. But again, cool dry places and if they are stored somewhat snuggly on a shelf they should be set. My dad has a few thousand LPs to put amount into a frame of reference when shelved. The more the merrier keeps things in good shape.
If he had cassettes, there is no telling how to get them to survive. They do what they are going to do. haha.
