About other genres. I have spoken to a smart, articulate rap fan who actually DID investigate the scene and knows a lot of underground hiphop and rap, and is actually as into it as we are into metal. Consequently he did not make any retarded comments about metal, such as the ones already shared. One of my good friends is also a very dedicated Jazz/Funk fan. These experiences gave me a knew perspective and showed me that if a person really likes a style of music and cares about it, that is what is important.

I was at a concert recently at an arena. I went to one of the concession stands to buy some food. I heard an employee say to another employee.

"Keep on guard tonight, these people are a violent bunch."

He'll learn to stop running his mouth when he realizes he's the one supplying booze to "violent metalheads."

If I wanted to split hairs with someone who said that, I'd tell them it's the hardcore shows where I've seen and/or heard about a greater degree of violent behavior and that it's that scene that sometimes gets clubs/promoters in deep shit, but even there, it's far from the norm. Of course, anyone who portrays metalheads as violent probably doesn't make a distinction between the two in the first place.

The good thing about hearing retarded remarks about metal is you learn not to make the same generalizations about other peoples' tastes. Well, usually.

I'm not violent or anything listening to all this underground Death Metal and then get to a show and even get worried how people act because I had no idea people really take it out of there bedroom or whatever to the extent.
