rap AND hip hop?! :OMG:

yeaup! i don't shelter them from anything in the real world. i want them to use their own greymatter to form their own opinions on the world around them. i give them the tools to do it, and offer advice when i can, but i want them to formulate their own thought process.

This is an interesting post, but I have a similar story with a different ending...

i am hoping my critters have an open minded view of music as such when they are older also. that's cool.

these are things i ponder also...

you need to ponder harder.

today in school I was asked what music I listened to. I said "a variety of metal, consisting of mostly progressive and black satan music" and I got a blank stare for a few seconds, and then "so who's your favorite rapper?"

To the comments about there being good pop or rap music that is not on MTV,etc...

Regardless if there is actually talented people in these music forms in someone's eyes it's all going to have the same characteristics. If I generally can't stand everything about the genre do you honestly think one of these pop artists would actually make a big enough impact to my ears to change my opinion. In music forms there are great people and not so great people when it comes to music. People with different degree's of talent/skill originally uniqueness. Sound and style characteristics in a genre are still going to be present and similiar. I really doubt these artists are actually the complete opposite of any other pop or rap music in a really noticable way. As a guitarist have to hear guitar very present. If you play an instrument you should understand that.

Reply with "DEATH TO UNBELIEVERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" and start doing a little jig and ripping your clothing (not off, just tearing it).

Or you could give him a blank stare for a few seconds then ask "So... underground porno-goregrind or symphonic thrash?" (whether or not such things do -or could- exist doesn't matter too much, you can answer with what you think you would prefer if they did). If you really want to, you can substitute some other question.

you are so really wrong.

well, you might not notice the difference, but that's more a mark of your lack of appreciative ability than an actual lack of difference.

I have had experiences similar to this. People look at me like I'm some sort of asshole when I say I like metal. Also, I hate it when people tell me I'm a poser metalhead after listing an array of band they've never heard of, then they tell me they listen to "REAL heavy death metal like Trivium and As I Lay Dying". It disgusts me to no end.

It really isn't the kids, the kids for the most part, are quite liberal. It is the conservative adults and seniors that are typically "pathetic" mind you that doesn't mean all of the kids are great and open minded, just not as pathetic to think a style of music is overtly Satanic at the core.

Bullshit! I know plenty of conservative kids. My mother is much more liberal than they are and she's more than 3 times their age!

I'm going to raise my kids on metal and make sure they take music theory at some point in their youth. I don't want them to grow up giving into the trends and all that. I want them to have good taste.

A very good idea. It was my music teacher in a theory class that blasted my mind wide open to Rap/Hip Hop (I'm still not a fan of most of the New School stuff, but I can appreciate where it's coming from). It is from the Theory classes that you can see the basis of all music theory - something the kids in the Musician's Discussion part of this forum can't handle.

My mother likes some (probably a lot, actually) of my music, I've even cought her playing some on several occasions. Which is probably good.

The only thing I could get my mom to listen to and not turn off right away was Opeth's Damnation....other than that she has to listen to my dad blaring Dream Theater, Dragonforce and Moonsorrow all the time

my mother thinks my music is shit and screams and shuts it off whenever we are in th same car. and she says "its my car, well listen to what i want."

There's definitely a difference between mainstream rap and underground rap but they're both still rap and both are built around the basis of the genre so it's understandable if one still doesn't like rap underground or mainstream. I personally can take rap in small doses (speaking of underground rap of course) but it just doesn't do it for me like metal does.
