My BIGGEST problem with power metal bands is that THEY ALL SOUND EXACTLY THE FUCKING SAME. They all use the same 3 or 4 chord changes. They're all 4/4 time, same vocal melodies, same beats. I have never heard a self-described power metal band that in any way didn't fit these standards. Death metal may all sound the same to power metal fans, but that's only because someone who's used to music with generic melodic chord changes can't wrap their brain around dissonant riffs. I... fuck... I don't care anymore.[/COLOR][/B]

You're a goddamn hypocrite, you know that, right?

Dumbest thing I hear is "it's just entertainment". Yeah, maybe if you listen to KI$$ or Six Feet Under or something along those lines.

Power Metal is good for only one thing: playing loud on a float during Mardi Gras complete with dancers in tight bike pants.

(note, I do not refer to bands like Iron Maiden and Dio as power metal, they are heavy metal imo)

Edit: I will admit though, its a good gateway for newer fans of metal. It does have good musicianship, but its so fucking cheesy that you'd expect the fans to wear shoulder pads and own keytars with pentagrams on them. imo - its even cheesier than Glam is.

how so.

explain yourself.

Because you're lumping all bands in a subgenre together. Do you get angry when people place all death metal bands into the same category? I'm assuming you do. Well, you're doing the same exact thing. Power metal isn't based on technical virtuosity and various time signature changes. That's not the point. They want to make epic, symphonic, beautiful music. Calling it all the same is wrong. Deadly wrong.

I dont know. it all really doe's sound the same to me. once i was realy drunk and someone played some power metal song and i said "this thing sounds like a song that should be played after a war victory or something" few minutes later i hear the same song and i say "man someone really loves this song" so my friend says "are you crazy this isn't Stratovarius!"

^ You get that in every genre. I've heard a lot of death metal bands that sound the same, but that doesn't mean they ALL sound the same. There is a HUGE difference between bands like Death and Morbid Angel, for example, just like there is a big difference between bands like Helloween and Blind Guardian.

We'll that's because Death are a band who are more "post thrash than death metal" and Morbid Angel (which happends to be one of my infulences to sing) are are you're steriotype death metal. now you take another band which was a steriotype death metal like Carcass and you wont hear the exact same thing.

Again Helloween started of as thrash and ended up being s start for a power metal. but when i listen to Blind Guardain and than for exemple i'll try out Edguy i doubt i'll be able to say this is a different thing from the last thing i heard. the one thing Power Metal does have is good long melodys which do help you tell differences from the song. something the Death Metal will lack badly for a new comer.

Edguy and Blind Guardian are immensely different, as well as many other power metal bands. Anyone with any knowledge of music at all can tell the difference between the two, and not just by the vocals.

I can enjoy Power Metal for short periods of time. It fun to listen to every once in a way but it is just to much cheese to take for long periods of time. Also, Power metal ballads can be some of the worst shit on the planet.

edit: every good "power" band is really a "prog" band.

Blind Guardian is a rare and exceptional exception, but they're about 88% progressive and 12% power anyway. I have never once ever heard another "power metal" band that sounded vaguely like Blind Guardian.

But even if i give you that they're power, every genre has a select few exceptional standouts, bands whose members would have made good music no matter what their genre because they're brilliant. So you have to judge a genre by all the scene bands, the immitators.

"Power" bands just seem to hold themselves to a really really pathetically low standard. Most power acts I hear are at about the writing level of a generic rap metal band in the late 90s. They don't even care that they're using the exact same melodies, riffs, and beats as every other fucking band in their genre. They're OK with that fact, and that, to me, is very sad.

I think my real point is that terrible power metal is 10 times worse than terrible any other genre.

The stupidest thing I got told was "you're too much of a metal head to date"
