Stupid Threads and Negativity!

I have no problem with structured criticism, but I do have a problem with the trolls coming in here complaining about Mike being a bad guy and stuff like Watershed sucking and all this crap. It's one thing to see Watershed as not being their best album, that's strictly opinion, but to complain about the songs being bad and that the band's performance was bad is just stupid.

@ Mr Samsara...

Awesome post 4 up. :D

I really LOLD with tears!

I didn't wanna quote, might have misled
above poster? maybe not?

Glad your here Man. :kickass:

I think the real point of this thread is about those who couldn't explain themselves when judging Watershed. That's just bad.

"Hessian Peel should be better instrumental". What I don't like in that thread is that it just means nothing. "I have nothing to say, let see if someone thinks Hessian Peel (random song) would be nicier without lyrics."

But I agree, people should have the right to say what they don't like, and that's just fine, but please, explain yourself. And remember that it's all about tastes, but often, I think a lot are judging too fast, without really paying attention.

In the end I still think that supporting the band is a better idea. Letting them choose their direction without having to base themselves on blaming fans. It'll be good anyway, because Opeth aren't posers.

People are always welcome to express themselves and their opinions here. That's what the forum is for. The problem is when people are disrespectful, rude, and have baseless criticism or simple choose not to say why they feel that way. This applies to criticism of both the art and the artists. Posters here should consider themselves criticizing the music, band direction, the members themselves, etc. as the equilavent of sitting at someone's dinner table as a guest at dinner and criticizing the meal and the cook. I mean, wait until you get in the car on the way home to talk shit. You have the whole world to talk shit. Doing it at the table in their dining room, in the cooks house is just rude. If the cook says that suggestions and comments regarding the meal and recipies, etc. are welcome (as they are here), do so in a nice, respectful way. "This tasts like shit". "Why?" "It just does... and the cook is fucking arrogant, too!... talking like he can cook better than anyone else... blah, blah, blah,...." right in front of the cook... that they just met for the first time... it's ludicrous, it's rude, it shows a lack of intelligence and consideration, and isn't tollerated here. It deserves an escort to the door by the hair and a swift kick in the ass on the way out... and I'm so happy to be the one to do the honors. So, eat up, comment and suggest all you wish... positive or negative comments are fine... just be cognizant of where you are and considerate of your host. It really is not too much to ask.

Cheers.

Nice way to explain it Mr Samsara, I totally agree, in real life, we usually put gloves on to tell someone how we feel about something just out of consideration for other's feelings, why can't we do it on the internet? Because we're all anonymous? So what, be respectful of others...

Seems like I'm partially to blame for the creation of this thread as I was the one who said that Hessian Peel would be better as an instrumental so maybe I should post a response here...

Keep in mind that I was very respectful in that post. I wasn't rude in the least and even offered praise a couple of times. I made sure to be specific in my criticism, saying exactly what I didn't necessarily like and why I didn't like it. I didn't say anything sucked. I didn't even say I disliked the song or even disliked the lyrics. I just cited something about the song that didn't work for me (I think the lyrics don't sync up with the music very well) and offered a somewhat constructive comment about the song saying I'd like it better as an instrumental.

I think I got more backlash out of that post than some guy who comes on the forum to say "Opeth is terrible. I hate them. They're uncreative. blah blah blah" I critique things. It's what I do. I always offer feedback on everything I'm involved in. I critique music. I critique my professors. I offer several suggestions to the developers of computer games I play. It's what I do. I'm a feedbacker. For me to complain about one little thing about one Opeth song is praise coming from me.

Just wanted to clear up my position on this whole ruckus.

most of this "ruckus" has very little to do with your thread and more with the overall direction the forum has taken over the last few months and specifically to threads that are now deleted so you may not have even seen them... fyi.

I have had enough of all the rubbish that posters on this board are coming up with in regards to "Watershed"

Put simply, there aren't may bands that when a new album is released, I find it so addictive and compelling that it is quite hard to listen to anything else for a few months. Opeth, Katatonia and Porcupine Tree are three bands that completely compliment my musical taste with every release.

Watershed is no different.

As a music fan of 16 years (since I discovered Metallica when I was 15) I have been exploring many styles of music to find "magic" bands that just encapsulate everything i want in an aural feast. Opeth in particular are one such band.

So basically I would like to aplogize to Mikael and Opeth for all the "so-called" fans that frequent this forum, who type alot of insulting things about the art you are letting us enjoy.

Yeah sure posters will say "opinions are everyones right" and "taste is individual" yadayada, but essentially, if you didn't absolutely appreciate the what Opeth are offering to their fans, what the hell are you doing here??

Thanks Opeth for giving me and the majority of your fans an absolute treat with Watershed and please continue letting us share the art you want to release!

wow........i think you stole my personality:lol::lol:. also i think you have almost double my post count which is also slightly weird. and yeah we can say we dont like it, but i tihnk some people go a little beyond an opinion or constructive critisism, i mean yeah fine, you(these critics) dont like watershed, but that doesnt make it a turd or an abomination on humanity

this post should be stickied in its on thread. i agree 100%, best way to phrase it too, there's a way to debate, and a way to be a dick

also sorry for the double post

I totally agree... people shouldn't be so eager to judge everything after one or two listens... good albums need time. Though Watershed hit me when I heard it for the first time, it still manages to sound better and better after each time I give it a go.

Here's the thing. I can sit here and argue all day long why I think Blackwater Park is Opeth's worst album and why Watershed is so much better than BWP. However, it's an opinion. ...and for the most part, there's a lot of freedom over opinions on a forum.

I really like Watershed as an album. It's in my top four realeases from Opeth. But, I can understand why there'd be a lot of negativity towards it. Or, why other's would like other discs moreso than Watershed. But, it's a moot point to sit there and get bent out of shape that some people may not care for the new record in respects to the band's other releases.

I've made this comment before. Opeth has one huge problem. ...and that's diversity in their song writing. You take a band that has death metal influence, black metal influence, classic rock influence, progressive rock influence, glam rock (and glam ballad rock) influence and many other styles. You can't please everyone, it's just not possible. Opeth has not gone the mainstream route and tried to sell out. Mike has taken the band in his direction. Similar to Dream Theater, when Opeth releases a new album you're going to hear the usual rants, "It's too heavy, it's too soft, it's too proggy, there's not enough guitar diversity, it's too focused around guitars, it's too focused around keyboards, etc." and the list can go on and on. Opeth's biggest problem with fan base is that they draw fans from an eclectic background of music genres. They're not like a Slayer where every record sounds like their last. They're just plain Opeth. The band is going to do what they want to do musically and do things the way they want and have fun doing it. Opeth cannot, at this point in their career, please everyone one of their fans when the 'proverbial' new record releases. Unfortunately, as a fan, you'll have to come to terms with that!

With that said, don't interpret that in any wierd way. Please don't take that as a shot, I'm just stating the obvious about their fan base coming from different musical backgrounds.

its true though, when an album is released, half of us love it, the other half cries its too out there, or not out there enough, or this or that.

Fact is I pretty much toggle between the two so if you just keep looking back and forth between av and sig you'll pretty much get the picture.

haha photoshop please! Just glancing back and forth had me in stitches.

And as per usu. Mr Samara, cheers for the good work.
