How many Sub Genre's are there? or is there too many to name... can anyone name ALL the sub genre's?

I only know of a few like:
Gore Metal
Hair Metal
Viking Metal even i heard mentioned
and my friend said one called Poodle Rock which is bands like The Darkness and Guns and Roses...
and is Speed Metal a sub genre?

anyway.. what other ones are there?

The only sub genres of "metal" I consider their own genre would be...

Black Metal
Death Metal
Thrash Metal
Speed Metal
Doom Metal
Conventional Heavy Metal ala Dio
Grindcore
Power Metal
Prog Metal
Melodic Death
Goth Metal

All those other genres people come up with to describe one or two bands that play music that don't fit into any of the aforementioned categories is friggin ridicioulous. 99% of metal bands can fit into those categories whether it be musically or lyrically. And that's my two cents. Keep the change.

- Grindcore is not a sub-genre of metal. It is a sub-genre of punk.
- Melo-death is a sub-genre of death metal.
- You didn't list folk metal.
- Speed metal is not a genre.

Agreed... also, melodic-black would be a sub-genre of black...

And you left out Technical Metal (no, it's not part of the Progressive category)

Considering the size of the melodic death metal movement (mainly the gothenburg scene), I'd say it's safe to call it a seperate genre all together, especialy considering how little it resembles death metal these days.

Where does Devin Townsend fit in?

"Progressive" and "Prog" are different to me. You have bands that are geniunely progressive such as maudlin of the Well/Kayo Dot, Gordian Knot, first-two-albums Opeth, and Ephel Duath, and then you have bands that are somewhat technical, that used to progress in their music, but are now just sort of standing still and playing keyboards. A lot of these bands are good but I think they are mislabeled as progressive. "Prog" seems to work much better for bands like Dream Theater, Pagan's Mind, Balance of Power, etc.

I think that the sub-genres of metal are a necessary evil because people need to have an idea of what they want to try next when they want to make a blind purchase, but I think at the same time, it is unfair to some bands.
I am not much into the "typical" european power metal bands because some people think power metal = a band that sounds like Helloween, but bands like Tad Morose and Angel Dust are lumped into powermetal because they fit nowhere else and those bands rip.

Well most of these thousands of genres are sub-sub-genres; of course most bands can fit into the genres you posted AllWithinMyMoronity. That's like saying "Oh fuck this "death metal" crap, we can just classify it all as rock!".
