That "Clayman" sound....

Disconnekt: Could I by any chance persuade you to post your eq and C4 settings? I know I can't use them as my sound is different - but I'm interested in seeing where the problem areas are and what you've done to eliminate them. I just heard your clip about a hundred times... great stuff... I'm completely brainwashed by now... :headbang:

I'm interested on these eq and C4 settings too

Sorry, I accidentally deleted a bunch of stuff from that session, but from memory, I can tell you that the EQ was pretty much all in the lower midrange (various points between 200 Hz and 1 kHz). Basically, the 5150 combo cab sounds boxy as hell, and the V30 is a midrangey speaker to boot. Some taming was necessary, both for some resonant peaks (narrow, deep notches) and general tonal character (wide, not-so-deep cuts). The only other EQ was a highpass filter at 80 Hz to get rid of unnecessary junk and a lowpass at around 11 kHz to knock off some of the fizz (the speaker I miked was fizzier than most I've heard). C4 was Andy's setting calibrated for the cab's resonant frequency and level of the recording, but in retrospect, I don't even really think it was necessary, as I've recently acquired an Engl 4x12 with much more thumpy lows and I'm getting by without the C4 on guitars just fine in most cases. The EQ settings I'm generally using now with the new cab work on the same principles (highpass at 80, get rid of midrange boxiness), but I have to use much less of it, since the Engl 4x12 is a MUCH nicer and better-built enclosure. Really thick 14-ply Siberian birch, solid construction, deeper cabinet, and they even put acoustic foam on the inside of the cab back. Also, the speakers are smoother in the top end so I don't need any lowpass filter most of the time.

Hope that helps!

Thx a lot man. Hope you'll post more stuff soon - I really can't see any way you can improve your guitar sound as I think you've achieved the perfect sound already. But if your new Engl cab sound better I hope you'll post a clip.

Cheers :kickass:

OK, update time. I recently acquired another SM57, an Engl 4x12 with v30s, and DFHS, so I sequenced some better drums, re-recorded the guitars, and this time I played ghetto bass (recorded guitar DI, pitchshifted down an octave, and ran it through Amplitube). The results can be found here. I got what I feel are better results than the 5150 combo with MUCH less EQ. Just to keep all things equal, I took the v30 that I recorded in the 5150 combo and put it in the Engl cab. HUGE difference... no more boxy mid resonance, and an even smoother top end. Engl sure knows how to build 'em. Let me know what you think!

dude that tone is awesome, so crushing, care to share the guitar bus inserts with us? what interface/preamps did you use also?

btw the internet is a small place, i live in mclean and centreville

Thanks, man! I think a bunch of Sneap forum members are in the NoVA area.

For the rhythm guitars, I only used Waves Q. Just a highpass at 80 Hz, a couple of wide EQ cuts at about 500 and 850 Hz to taste (this amp and cab are pretty midrangey, and this particular speaker has more resonance between 500 and 1k than most -- I think I cut somewhere between 6 and 9 dB on each of those frequencies), and a lowpass at 12kHz. That's it, though.

The ambient/lead tracks were just the on-axis mic, and they used slightly different EQ (I left more mids in, rolled off more of the top end, and notched some nasty frequencies in the treble). Those guitars were sent to an Aux track with a stereo delay.

As for interface/pres, just a Digidesign Mbox (the old one with the Focusrite pres). Really nice preamps that get mangled by shitty converters. :p

Disconnekt, can I ask what trilogy setting you're using? It sounds really nice

You can, but Trilogy was only used on the old clip, and I've messed around with the session a bunch since then... I'm sorry, but I have no idea which bass I used. I'm pretty sure I amped it through Amplitube, though, so I think that affects the sound more than the bass itself. The latest clip was just my guitar pitchshifted down.

Holy shit you're in falls church? Right on.

edit: wow not just you either, howdy to all the NoVa people here - I'm in Ashburn.

I just updated my webpage and there's a clip of guitar recording with this technique as well, it's track number 3 (sorry for the tuning but I wasn't there during tracking...): http://www.towerstudio.net

RE: Pic 1: MUST FUCKUS!!!!

Well, that's what my hungarian film prof, Vlad "The Impaler" Kabelik would always yell at us when we had an out of focus shot......

As for clip 3, that's some pretty great stuff, Brett! Wonderful, nasty tone. I gotta get a Mesa cab. Is that a standard or large size?

Yo Brett, great sounding material!

Just notice, you've done freak kitchen!! Tell me more! I have a track from them on constant loop- goes by the name of Porno daddddddy!!!!

And its pure class. Don't tell me you recorded it lol.
