The Books/Reading Thread

Thanks, Unknown, but you didn't answer my question. Is it just fantasy for fantasy's sake (nothing wrong with that) or is there anything deeper to it?

I would argue that Lovecraft had a deeper intention with it. Lovecraft and many of his followers created an entire mythos (the cthulu mythos), and Lovecraft was very much a believer in that man's role in the universe was, well, he had no role in the universe. A lot of his stories deal with people stumbling into ancient mausoleums or ancient temples of elder gods, and then their lives are just destroyed. Lovecraft wrote an essay on the purpose of Weird Fiction (or Horror, can't remember), that I'm sure you can find online

but yeah. I'd say he's fairly essential reading for most metalheads.

Robert E. Howard... I think I've read something by him, but it was science-fiction more than fantasy.

Robert E. Howard is the creator of Conan, King Kull, Solomon Kane, Bran Mak Morn, Red Sonja, etc. he's the king of pulp fiction adventure and fantasy... my favorite writer... i have a near religious reverence for the Conan stories by him :notworthy

Also Arthur Machen, Algernon Blackwood, Lord Dunsany, Robert W Chambers, and Clark Ashton Smith

Too many authors! Agh! Will do, though. Eventually.
