The Console & Video Game Topic

Well, about a week ago I got back into the Zelda kick...my file said the last time I had played was late May. I thought it was longer ago than that...anyway, it's been fun to play; I just got done unfreezing Zora's Domain and I'm really digging the Rollgoal game, even though it's enough to make you tear your hair out!

does anyone have good recommendations for 360 games that kick ass?

Depends what kind of games you like really. It's been a big week for games, with Bioshock (a must-own game by all accounts), Two Worlds (don't waste your time) and Blue Dragon (so-so reviews) all coming out.

Older games that are worth a look:

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2: I love this game. If you dig near-future mostly realistic squad based tactical shooters, this game is most certainly for you. For those of you without a 360 who may be reading this, be aware that the PC version is a completely different beast, and that isn't a good thing. The 360 version is awesome, the pc version isn't.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance Gold Edition: The Gold Edition includes both the Hero and Villain packs and is just a great game all around.

Overlord: I haven't played it myself, but i know a number of people who have been having a BLAST with this one. I guess getting to command a horde of evil lil minions has it's fun side hehe.

bioshock = amazing
eternal sonata looks good

TMNT is a good rent
spider man 3 is good for 10 hours =/
shrek 3..sucks

Bioshock indeed = amazing.

I also bought Blue Dragon because I love old school Jap-Style RPGs, but I haven't even played it yet! It's all my boss at work's fault! He recommended I try out Guild Wars because I kinda like MMO's but I hate paying for them. Next thing I know, I'm addicted to it... I wish I had my $60 back for the Blue Dragon I'm probably not gonna get around to playing now...

As for games on 360 worth a look, Dead Rising was my first and probably still my favorite 360 game, doing a great job of combining the Old School Beat-Em-Up style gameplay with the Go-Anywhere, Do-Anything type of sandbox style of gameplay. Also, Guitar Hero II has easily taken up the most of my 360 time. Marvel Ultimate Alliance is a very fun game alone or especially with friends and Bioshock is a great play the first time through and everyone and their uncle is going to be buying Halo 3 in 2 weeks time. There's plenty of options out there, go get 'em!

Also, I expect Rock Band and Assassin's Creed to be my non-Wii addictions around the Holiday Season.

Oh hell yeah. It's going to be all about Rock Band. I used to play the drums from when i was a single digit kid till my upper teens, so you better believe i'm looking forward to the drum set. I want to see how well it translates.

I just hope against hope that some of the promised music/albums released every week for the first year will include our kind of metal.

...I really want to play the kareoke games.... but only when no one is home....

My mind is exploding with the possibilities here--I've got the Wii, finally access to a PS2, my friend is moving in and bringing her NES games....... plus I've been needing to play The Longest Journey FOREVER! Right now I keep switching between that, Katamaris, and Shadow of the Colossus. SoC is much better than I thought it would be--the whole boss battle thing sounded kinda dumb and linear to me but I really do like it. I would be playing more Twilight Princess but while I was on a trip to Oregon my now-boyfriend began and beat it :p

I finally broke down and bought Bioshock. All the hype got to me. I figured that although i am positive it is over rated (the ending is supposedly disappointing, either one you reach), it still must be good enough to deserve owning.

I also nabbed Beautiful Katamari because well.. it's Katamari! plus achievements! The biggest complaint that people can level against this game is that it is more of the same as in the last games. They are trying to suggest that the fun is wearing thin. I beg to differ! However, it was a very wise choice to price this game at $39.99. A full $59.99 would have seriously hampered sales and probably made me wait on this one.

I will say that Bioshock is one of the most exciting gaming experiences I've ever played the first time through. The only thing I think it lacks is longevity. It's great while you play it, but you may not be playing it all that long.

I also broke down and renewed my Gamefly subscription. Now, there are games out there that are definite MUST BUY games for me, like Guitar Hero III and Mario Galaxy. However, there are others I'm not sure about like Metroid Prime 3 and Mass Effect. So, I'll be collecting many upcoming achievements on games I don't actually own, like my recent Beautiful Katamari achievements! (Actually just sent it back to Gamefly, hopefully I'll be getting Tomb Raider Anniversary next or a copy of Psychonauts I can then pay to keep.)

Also, New Zelda for DS and New Castlevania for PSP means my big boy consoles may not be getting much attention!!

I almost didn't make it, the stores were closing as i got there, but i nabbed Guitar Hero 3 today for the 360. Now i'll be up most of the night getting my fake guitar rockinz on.

Edit: 4:30am. I beat it on Medium (5 stars on all but like 2 songs, 100% on many. I'm a Hard level player, but i like to start out on medium to get quick cash to unlock the bonus songs), tried a few bonus songs (including the Lacuna Coil and In Flames), and tried a few songs on Hard. The battles are definitely interesting. I'm not sure if i quite like them or not. The ending of the game itself is pretty cool. I like the way they handle one particularly challenging song. You actually get a chance to play it all the way through. Oh and i found Metallica - One to be alot of fun to play. It's about time they made an appearance on this series! Anyway i won't say any more as i don't want to spoil anything for anyone who cares about such things in a game like this.

I'll say Guitar Hero 3 has been a lot fo fun and a lot more challenging than GH2. I almost sailed through all of Medium at 5 Stars except for 3 songs, Stricken by Disturbed (Pain in the Ass the first time through) Knights of Cydonia by Muse (DEFINATELY too hard to be considered Medium!) and, as expected, Raining Blood. Slayer is a tough band to conquer. Eventually I fought my way through and 5-starred em all before going to bed last night.

I wish I wasn't busy every night this week so I could play it more. But so far, I think the most fun song I've played in it was Cult of Personality. Living Colour still rocks!

Yeah those were the songs that gave me trouble too. I told a friend that i found it "disturb"ing that the Disturbed song was the first one to actually give me trouble. I was surprised that Knights of Cydonia was as difficult as it was, so yeah i agree about the fact that it was rough for Medium, and Raining Blood, i only played it once last night and 3 starred it. Definitely tough your first time out. But i think that's what they keep doing, they keep ramping up the difficulty. I remember reading one review that said something like "You remember Expert, now known as Hard". Anyway, i like the challenge. Especially after the cake walk that was Rocks The 80's.

And yes, Cult of Personality still completely rocks. I was doubting that they would make it rock, considering as how they had to rerecord it (because they lost the masters), but they did a great job.

Edit: I just nabbed the Tone Deaf achievement ("beat any song on the expert difficulty with the games sound options turned down to zero"). I got it on my first try too. Fyi, i used Slow Ride. Seemed the most likely candidate.

Have you signed up for an account on Guitarhero.com yet? I went on there and created my own Tour Group, the Kings of Kings! Currently looking for those about to rock!

Also, yes, Rocks the 80's was real easy, I also wasn't a big fan of a lot of the songs on it and thought it was overpriced. $50 for just 30 songs kinda sucks when Guitar Hero 2 was only $40 and had over 50 songs built in. Oh well, at least I'll get more than my money's worth out of this. Favorite to play tracks so far: Cult of Personality, Bulls On Parade & Before I Forget (Who knew? Slipknot's fun to play!)

I just made an account now. Of course the linking process is not working right because of the flood of people. It's saying no such token now. I'll assume it's in the queue and give it a day or so before i bitch.

Heh yeah about Slipknot, on EGM's last podcast, i think it was Jennifer Tsao that said basically the same thing about Slipknot. She was like "Who knew i like Slipknot? not me!"

Anyway, if you want, drop me your XBL name, either here or in a PM and i'll add you to my friends list, we can get some GH rocking going on sometime.

I'll throw my Gamertag out here - Baron Awesome

I'm a little pissed that the Link Account thing on guitarhero.com isn't working right. I think it mostly affects people on 360 because my friend got the Wii version and his linked up the first time, no problems. I've been trying to get it linked since I got the game Sunday morning and it still isn't working. I'm hoping they get it fixed up real soon, the world needs to know of my favorite songs!

yea guitar hero 3 is great on live also if you gots a wii get the game zack and wiki casue all i can think of is that its a mix os monky island and wariowar smooth moves
also i bought the simpsons game and i loving it right now onyl played through the first 2 lvls casue i gots school and all..but yea....

I got the Simpsons Game too and it is most freakin' sweet! The gameplay is pretty standard, but the storyline, humor and environment is great. This totally is how a Simpsons game should be made (Although a better co-op mode couldn't hurt!)

In the world of Guitar Hero, the Kings of Kings on Guitarhero.com is slowly expanding and gaining power! However, I've personally run into a dead end. I've got 3 songs left on Hard I am having a hell of a time with. Ironic that they're by my 3 favorite bands in the game, Slayer, Maiden and Metallica. But like in Guitar Hero 2, I WILL PERSERVERE!

I also attempted Expert, got to the 2nd tier of songs, cried like a little girl. I could use some downloadable content already!

PS: Tramz, what is thine Gamertag? If you already sent me a friend request, SWEET, if not, send me one or PM me with your tag.

You are *slightly* ahead of me. I have a little more than half of the songs done on Hard (most 3 stars, a few are 4 stars), and only perhaps 2 or 3 songs done on Expert (though one was Sabotage in Quick Play, so it doesn't really count). But i'm with you, bring on the downloadable content! (though hey, i'm still hoping Roadrunner gets wise and works with Microsoft/MTV Games/Harmonix to release DPP for Rock Band)

Yeah i had sent you a friend request, which you accepted. I had included a voice message so you'd know who it was. :] Anywayz although in hindsight i wish i had gone with "Tramz" as a Gamertag, it's R0R93.

Btw woot. It looks like guitarhero.com is FINALLY working and i was able to link my game. Now it's time to start playing up a storm where it will count towards that linkage. Anyway, catch me on XBL or add me as a friend on AIM or YIM (Tramz93 on either) and we can get together for some rocking.

FINALLY I HAVE BEATEN ETERNAL DARKNESS!!! ::dance!::Back in the day, I started playing it and thought I was playing easy mode when in fact I was playing hard mode and the game was a PAIN IN THE ASS but also wonderful... I got very close to the end (only now I realize exactly HOW close I was to the end, literally 2 hours away from it) and then I found out that the reason it was a pain in the ass was because I'd been playing hard mode :p that plus heading back to college = I never really got around to finishing it. So a few months ago I started playing on easy mode and have been cruising through it. The game is kinda linear but the insanity effects are so worth it. The game claims that it will mess with the players head and it definitely did with me. It tricked me 3 times and then the whole mansion part with the phantom doorbells and knocking and creepy package-with-a-face were just creepy. OH AND BATHTUB LADY X_x WTF MAN.

I've also finally been introduced to the joy that is Guitar Hero. I played it at Dragoncon but sucked royally and it was in the middle of a bunch of people so I didn't really have a chance to sit down and learn it. Now that I have the hang of it, I'm enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. The only problem I have is that while I want to get better at it.... I really don't want to play a song I hate 20 times >________> which is also my concern with Rock Band, those songs REALLY don't do it for me.

Now to get my butt in gear and finish Twilight Princess............. >_>

Woo it's about time you beat Eternal Darkness. I remember you were giving it another go then you just kind of gave up again. That game was like a life project for you hehe (hey i have them too. I still have a save game from the original Baldur's Gate for the PC that dates back to it's release that i swear one day i will finish.. if i can stop getting sidetracked by legions of new games that is)

Ok, this is hilarious. I am reading the Rock Band review in this months OXM (Official Xbox Magazine) and they've included the song list. The hilarious part is that on the list is Timmy & The Lords of the Underworld - Timmy & The Lords of the Underworld! I guess the fictional band idea has had some measure of success and they brainstormed for another such band they could use in this type of game. It's a bit cheesy, but also kind of cool (especially for South Park fans).

Looking at the list i notice a number of songs that are in GH3: Beastie Boys - Sabotage, Black Sabbath - Paranoid, The Killers - When You Were Young, Mountain - Mississipi Queen, Smashing Pumpkins - Cherub Rock. I would complain about this, but they are good songs and we are getting to sing them and more importantly, play their drum/percussion track. Still, one wonders if there hasn't been a bit of a silent war on the part of Harmonix to take as many of the better songs from GH3 as possible and top what was done by Activision/Redoctane & NeverSoft.

Also, find i am mildly disappointed with the song list over all, but only mildly. I don't know what i was expecting, but there are a number of songs here that i simply could care less about. For example: Flyleaf - So I'm Sick? Fall Out Boy - Dead On Arrival? Meh. Some may be happy about this, i would not be among that group. There are also only 58 songs. A lot of people are not going to understand that more work had to go into each song, and they will compare directly to GH3 that had what? 72 songs? For me this isn't much of an issue because it's like 3 games in one. Even solo you can play as a guitarist, a vocalist and a percussionist. Still, i wouldn't have minded a few more songs. And out of those 58 songs it looks like only 7 are covers. That's a reasonable amount. Though i am disappointed that one of those covers is Rush - Tom Sawyer. I would have hoped that would be an original.

I am still excited and can't wait to get my hands on this game, but i really hope that the promised weekly downloads will be something to cheer about, and not MTV favorites.

On that note, It is my sincerest hope, a hope against hope i know, that sometime in the year of promised downloadable content, that the labels which produce the music we know and love, would contact MTV Games/EA to see how possible a release of some kind of downloadable album of their artists would be. It is the best chance the real metal community has ever had to see our favorite bands get some serious treatment in this gaming phenomenon (not to mention, it's great publicity for current efforts here in the united states and a bit of money to boot). Roadrunner, Century Media, and Nuclear Blast, i am particularly looking at you as the ones who could each make something like this happen for your rosters, if anyone could.

The thought of being able to rock out in Rock Band to everyone from Nightwish to Opeth. From Tarot (admittedly a longer shot than others) to After Forever to Firewind. Scar Symmetry to Arch Enemy and Dark Tranquillity, to.. well the possibilities are nearly endless, is downright exciting and more than a few metalheads would gladly shell out the money for the opportunity rock to the songs of these artists. Including Dragonforce in GH3, and Soilwork - Exile as a downloadable song in GH2 were the first steps. Now with Rock Band, the time has come to take these early successes and move to the next level.

EDIT: I've made some refinements to the Rock Band/Metal Downloads argument and posted it here for easier reading and longevity.
