The Devin Townsend Band

I like some of his stuff. Ocean machine is good and AE is excellent for the most part. Not only can he really play, the fucker can sing / scream in tune. Bit like freddie mercury ;)

I will not be checking this band out, nor will I be looking into other projects by Devin Townsend. Btw, what SYL album would you recommend??? Seriously.

I haven't heard Physicist yet - should I?

Yep tis a great album. Very underated. Its the most similar to SYL of his solo work (Same band members). Some say it was a SYL album to begin with but due to label issues it morphed into a solo project.

I definitely agree! I've recently gotten into Physicist and can't believe I never gave it much attention before.

Namaste, Kingdom, Irish Maiden, Material, and Planet Rain are great songs. There are some really catchy riffs of Physicist.

I've also heard the same thing about Physicist being an SYL album. I've also heard that Devin decided it wasn't "heavy enough" to be considered to be SYL and called it Physicist (also along w/ the record label stuff). But who knows? I think that SYL used to play Physicist songs live as well.

I heard 'Namaste', and thought it was terrible. I haven't got 'Physicist' yet, the production sounded awful. Am I mistaken?

Yeh the production is erm...well different from the typical massive devy production...not sure why...anyway I dont think the production is all that bad. You should definatly get it, sgot some top tunes on it.

saw him in February of this yr with Opeth and Dark Tranquiility. Fuckin' guy is incredible. Goofy and spacey, but extremely talented. While I enjoy Synchestra quite a bit, Ocean Machine, imo, is his best.

oops...i was reading the thread and forgot about it... but i have´nt understood why he has two different projects where in both he writes all the material.

SYL and DTB are very different bands. If he used SYL material on a record, in conjunction with DTB material, it wouldn't work. For example, the songs 'Oh My Fucking God' and 'Slow Me Down' wouldn't make any sense together on one record.

The reason they are seperate projects is because the attitude behind them is completely different. SYL has always been just childish pissed off for the sake of it music and nothing more. It was never meant to be 'deep' in any way. If you actually listened to his older solo works you know that those albums follow a completely different approach. So yes, having two seperate projects for those things make plenty of sense.

With the exception of Physicist which sounds like SYL-lite, none of his regular solo work sounds like SYL at all. And he does not write all of the SYL material either, after City SYL became a proper band and other members are contributing too now (though the same happened with his normal solo work, hence it currently being called The Devin Townsend band).

I bought my very first album of the DTB band yesterday. It was my first touch with his music and I have to say that I'm pleasantly surprised actually. The album is Accelerated Evolution and I read some previous posts about it. I think the material is structured in a very interested way and most important of all: passionate enough to be convincible.

IMO

Amazing line-up! I'll cherish that tour for a long time!
