who else is important? madder mortem, katatonia, nevermore, esoteric and a few others. in my opinion, very few other metal bands are doing much worth listening thats exciting or interesting. but theres always handfuls of bands doing music decently for that "i gotta have my metal" sound. but thats not really my cup of tea.

hmmmm thats weird. Would never have picked you as been a fan of Nevermore or katatonia. especially Nevermore!!!
I really like them but I will never fully love the singers voice. Gota love Loomis though. Whats your favourite album by them and Katatonia?

Edit:- and + 10,000 for Akercocke, their new CD has been on MAXIUM rotation in my car and at home which hasn't really happened with a band since I first heard of Opeth with Blackwater Park

why is it such a shock id like those 2 bands? i like everything exceptional, regardless what genre. anyone who doesnt have an open mind is selling themselves short. *cough* metal wrath *cough*. but to answer your question...my favorite nevermore is easily dead heart...its their most complete i think. and my favorite katatonia is last fair deal gone down.

The last Katatonia albums are all excellent works, better than the past doomdeath ones, an amazing band that relies more on a dark atmosphere and perfect songwriting than on heaviness for heaviness sake. Akercocke, Nevermore and Opeth are still going fucking strong imhoimo.

sweet Last fair deal is my fav too. Im suprised you didnt say godless endevour though for Nevermore, Dead heart is a good album though. 1st album i purchased by them. Whats Neon black like? only album I havent heard....
and what do you think of Nevermores vocals? I really didn't think they would be to your taste to be honest.. I think they could easily find a more fitting singer..

neon black is like dead heart, but a little less heavy (obviously due to the 7 string change for dead heart), but very similar vein. the production isnt quite as crisp and clear though.

as for the vocals, i think warrel is fantastic and interesting despite being a completely aquired taste. hes not for everyone, but i think he essential to the bands sound.

IMO, the vocals in Enslaved are laughable and the music is nothing interesting enough to overcome that. There are tons of "evil" sounding bands around that have vocals like this (someone torturing a domestic cat) and it has no power or impact at all, imo. Just sounds shit.

I only have This Godless Endevour by Nevermore but that is excellent. Warrell is a bit like a gruff Halford... but he has a unique and powerful sound that I love now I've gotten used to it.

I bought Ruun today, pretty good, but I haven't been able to listen to it decently with headphones yet. I already downloaded a few mp3s from them from Below The Lights which really pwned me with the kickass weirdass atmospheres.

Btw, This Godless Endeavour is a masterpiece. Probably one of those few thrash metal-like records that will still be remembered decades later.

Enslaved was on my to buy list for a long time now, and with the good reviews I read in magazines I finally bought my first album of them, being RUUN. first time I listened to it, it didn't blew my mind away or anything, but now after a few times I absolutely love it and I'll be playing it a lot in the coming weeks! I'll certainly check out their other albums too, perhaps a new band for my favourite list ;)

perhaps I'm being idiot, but on certain moments I hear a similarity with opeth wich I have never heard in any other band, and I mean this very positively, more as in a certain feeling the music gives, or perhaps even arrangements in the music ... oh well :)

and to join the discussion about NFU's recommandationslist .. didn't you also forget Arcturus then? ;) and what do you think about Borknagar, perhaps you think they suck, but oh well, for me, those 2 bands are in the top as well, although I dislike an album or 2 from both (like masquerade infernale from arcturus, wich sounds horrible imo, perhaps should listen some more to it .. and also quintessence from borknagar I didn't enjoy as much).

Ruun is my first Enslaved album and it's a grower. I don't think the vocals really stand out that well but I love the instrumental parts and the whole feel of it. Don't give up on it.

i didnt forget borknagar. borknagar hasnt been anything to even pay attention to for many years. vintersorg is the kiss of death in everything he does, ive never seen someone be their own worst enemy quite like him except maybe michael jackson and lars ulrich.

as for arcturus...i WOULD have agreed if they didnt sputter out their most recent album which was absolutely devoid of anything groundbreaking for them. they had never really done the same thing twice up till now, but this last record ironically sounded just like a generic borknagar record. so we'll see...but theyre REALLY going to have to kick it up a notch the next time around. but losing garm was crippling apparently.

edit: youre not being an idiot with the enslaved/opeth comparison. if you take a little trip back to 1997, and listen to the first track on eld...youll hear some new school Opethish riffing before MAYH had even been released later in 1998. something to think about folks.
