The GMD Social Hobby Thread

This could go in a variety of threads but it works here too, so:

I've been creating the board/card game collection of my dreams over the last year or so, and it is nearly completed in terms of games that are already in print. The main problem I have now is that even though there is a local game shop/group of boardgamers, available time/collective interests in game type/style still don't easily align. As much as quick games can be fun, I really like the 2-3+ hour strategic/tactical games also, and getting people to play those sorts of games is difficult even in the local board gamer community, either due to complexity or due to the "time sink" required.

Guitar, drums, collecting music but also paintings of nature, used to play ice hockey but can't anymore because of knee injury so I enjoy watching it instead, hiking, my dog and Xbox.

Does Axis and Allies count in this? Oh and I've played Settlers of Catan once, pretty fun.

I loved the old 90s PC version of A&A, but no I haven't bought the board game as I figured it isn't sufficiently different from Risk, and I have a few versions of Risk.

just out of curiosity, what do you have? I currently have Settlers of Catan, Pandemic, and 7 Wonders

Well I have 3 small bookcases full, so it would take a while to list haha. I do have Settlers of Catan, but I'm not a huge fan of the game so I didn't get the bazillion expansions for it. Don't have the other two either, but I have played 7 Wonders. All three of those play pretty fast relatively speaking, so finding players for those games isn't difficult.
It is hard for some of the games I have to get played due to time and/or complexity (in rules anyway, if not in strategy).

Terra Mystica
Merchants & Marauders
Tide of Iron
Discworld
Game of Thrones the board game
Carcassonne (not even sure why this one isn't popular much in my area, it isn't necessarily all that long, but remembering what scores and how much etc can be difficult with expansions figured in).
Trajan
Russian Railroads
Tigris & Euphrates
Tzolkin

Discworld, Carcassonne, and T&E can all be of shorter length, depending on different things. But all the others with a full complement of players you are looking at 2-3 hours for a game easy.

yeah. I have a group of 3-4 people I play with, so that helps. Will definitely look into the games you mentioned (I've been eyeing Carcassonne for a while)

Carcassonne is a great game, and the expansions all add something different. It brilliantly works well stand alone or with pretty much any number of the expansions. I got one of the "big box" sets and then eventually added the expansions that didnt come in the box.

Suburbia is a great game that is less time intensive so it didnt make my whine list. So is Kingdom Builder, which also just re-released as a big box with all expansions. Lords of Waterdeep is a really good introductory game to the worker placement mechanic, where games like Tzolkin or Russian Railroads get much more abstract with it.

A big problem for Tide of Iron and Memoir 44, although they are great games, they play best with 2 players. Not good for group meetings.

Games that play lots of people and play quickly seem to be the rage lately. Avalon (Resistance), Bang! the dice game, and Skull and Roses all fall in this category. I like/have these, but sometimes I want a damn "meal" instead of endless "snacking".

oh man fuck Resistance. That's such a rage inducing game haha. I definitely get what you're saying though

I've never played the original, just the Avalon variant. I really enjoy it, not sure what sort of rage what be caused by it, unless someone is uber competitive in what should be a more friendly type game.

I collect music, in its many physical forms... Masturbate a lot... Watch cartoons.... Troll internet message boards. That's about it. I suppose I'm also an amateur alcoholic. Gotta get better there. Anyone here play clash of clans? Been playing that for a while. My base is actually fairly beastly.

I'm gonna build my all-time favorite Magic deck soon. With all old printings of the cards. Fucking Channelball. Its gonna be awesome.

What can I say? I'm a degenerate.

Plus it's a classic. Except mine intentionally won't be rocking Moxen or Alpha/Beta duals, so it won't be as busted.

It got to the point people were playing UU control decks and just countering the fireball. Playing control in casual pretty well ruined it for everyone so it was backed off. I think we "banned" channel... We focused more on coupling good commons and uncommons with reject rares. Led to lots of goofy scenarios and getting swept by weird shit. I really should start playing again. I actually have the money to, unlike before.

Got back into painting models, working on my Tyranids right now. I'd be actually playing but I only know two people that play 40k, one which I never see and the other isn't that interested anymore. I've thought about going to the local gamer haunt but seems awkward to just ask strangers to spend three or four hours dealing with someone who doesn't have the newest codex or rulebook.

Tbh I'm mainly doing it cause its always been a dream for me to build Channelball, but I never was able to get old copies of Channel or Ivory Tower (I want to build it with the oldest possible copies just to be a showoff). In my childhood I never had a credit card to order things online; now at least I have the opportunity. I may just get a prepaid Visa card.

I've got just a few things left to paint on my IG before I'll have a tourney size army. Haven't been able to work on it during the semester. Hoping to finish up during the break. Fortunately I sort of a know a couple of guys who do/have played 40k through doing other gaming, so hopefully one or more people will be happy to teach this newb. I have the new rulebook/codex but trying to just read the rulebook without context is a little fucked.

Gaming: Typically one MMO at a time (ESO right now), some occasional turned based strategy (Civ Beyond Earth) and various indie steam games.

Music/Vinyls: Recently started collecting. Only have a few but don't wanna go ham. Mostly Atmospheric BM, Stoner and classic/souther rock which are easily my top genres.

Coffee & Scotch: I don't buy super high end stuff, but like trying different varieties.

TV/Movies: Anything with a dark/historical vibe or an anti-hero main character. Game of Thrones, House, Hannibal, Breaking Bad, Vikings, Kingdom of Heaven, Braveheart, Reign of Fire, 13th Warrior, etc.

Poker: I've gotten away from this the past year or so, but I love no limit hold'em.

Reading: Darker stuff here as well. Anything pseudo-science/occult/pagan/astral projection related (real or not, its interesting!). Overall, much this type of stuff seems to shock or oppose- I'm not a fan of anything Satanic/Wiccan/fru-fru new age. History can be good if it's not too dry. Weird shit like the Schumann resonances (the frequency the earth vibrates at) or gravity and associated theories are cool too, if written in layman's terms. Alternate history is another one I haven't delved into much but would be cool.

Options Trading. Hey, I'm a broker, no surprise I like to trade. I'm not a day trader but love playing (weekly short strike- 1-2month out long) calendar spreads and making vega (volatility) and theta (time decay) plays. Buying out of the money calls/puts is what most people think of, but that's not much better than buying a lottery ticket. I make high probability of success trades and take my profits off the table before losing them. I don't do crazy models or anything, just napkin math. A thorough understanding of how the numbers interact, setting (and sticking to) predefined exit points max-gain/max-loss, etc. Time decay is a beautiful thing.
