I wouldn't consider the time as being wasted. Forums, such as this one, allow you to connect with a much wider base instead of being restricted to people in your, or neighboring, cities. Personally, from this board alone, when I travel to Europe, Australia, or South America, I know I have friends to drink with. It won't be a totally random affair.
