The low quality level of more or less popular metal music today

I just think it's absolutely LUDICROUS to say the "vast majority" of music from the '80s was terrible or whatever.

It's funny because, if you ask me, pop today sucks ass more than ever. You're talking about the likes of Britney Spears, boy bands, American Idol winners, and corporate pop rock like Sum 41 and Avril Lavigne.

In the 80s, you had Duran Duran, Eurythmics, The Bangles, Madness, etc. I think to be fair, some credit has to be given to those 80's artists for writing their own songs, being able to play instruments (live), and actually able to sing without the need for vox enhancement.

Annie Lennox has an incredible voice. John Taylor, bassist for Duran Duran, wrote some of the best bass lines ever.

Metal, by the way, was born in the 80's. Yeah yeah, you can take your Sabbaths, Priests, and Deep Purples, but let's face it, heavy metal didn't truly come to life until Iron Maiden released NUMBER OF THE BEAST. All I'm saying is that THAT was the "flick of the switch".

Also, I just thought about it the other day, but the first metal riff ever was "You Really Got Me" by The Kinks. I think that's from 1964. Am I right?

?

crap haha

I well into 'heavy metal' years before that

oh fuck I'm old but metal was thriving as a genre after maiden released thier first album
and don't forget there was saxon, angelwitch, diamond head, judas priest etc sabbath were being very metal with dio, motorhead of course, but lemmy always said they weren't metal (rock n' roll)

maiden were very much the most popular metal band
but there were seas of denim and leather at gigs well before the number of the beast
