i was messing around a couple nights ago with a picture of me. any thoughts?

Your hair... it's too short. ;)

There's too much going on in the picture and no real focal point. Obviously the focus was meant to be on you but instead it's very dark and lacks contrast so your eyes skip over it and instantly go to the places with the most contrast which is the white edge clashing against the black inside.
It's just some composition stuff that it takes a bit of time to learn.

hey thanks for the comments. i actually didnt want me to be the focal point, i didnt want anything to be the focal point, thats why everything seems random. the picture of me is just an aspect of the piece, its no more meaningful than the hand written letter, etc. i made sure to take out the brightest parts of the picture of me so the picture blends with other parts of the pice. even when i look at it i feel like there are many problems, but thats what i wanted out of it, if that makes sense, lol.

nice one. love the misty atmosphere but the low opacity of the tree reduces the depthness, I would see more contrast and more elements. It's always interesting to see stuff that would tell a story. But you are the right person to know if it represents the band.

Speaking of something different, I have a story to tell about how we feel things and others perceive them differently. In my college years, a litterature teacher told me that she was about to write a book, and she wanted to write the BEST book ever written, one night she dreamt of a story, the most beautiful story, so intense that she dropped a tear and in the middle of the night she decided to take a pencil and write down a few words to remember the idea the day after. when she woke up in the morning it was written on the paper : **A man and a woman love each others.

The point is : she had in mind a story and felt an emotion that none of us could felt. Illustration is exactly the same thing. We should always ask ourselves what the art tells by itself not what we wanted to demonstrate.

Once again, your illustration is very cool, we both have a similar style.

Wow you guys are really good! : ) Keep up the good work. Greetings everyone, this is my first post here on this forum. I'm a big fan of Travis Smith's work, and have been for a long time. Haha I always check this forum out every now and then, but was too nervous to post anything on here. But hey ummmm, how's it going guys!? Looking forward to get to know more future artists/designers through this!
cheerz!

Hey this is the third photo-manipulation illustration I've ever done. What do you guys think?

pretty cool job. one thing that i think hinders the image is the blurriness of the image. it seems like there are some parts like the sky that are crisp and sharper than others. still a pretty cool job.

Did these a lil while ago. havent touched digital art in months, been too busy partying hahah. il get back into it hopefully though

This was something i did for a chap here on UM, his band is called recycle the soul, check em out.

Pretty well, almost done.
For those interested, my 'lady with the violon' is also a ND album and they released a Live Audio CD of their DVD in Belgium, not yet in stores but will soon, the artwork is from me too. I can speak of it coz Paul already exposed them on his myspace.

Exactly, but I use photos too!
I also use textures to get more depthness. Some illustrations have a lot of pictures, some of them have none.

Just to compare it : The lady with the violon is composed of 6-7 photos for the face and I painted the blindfold. The violon is also a picture as you may notice.
m01 on my website is 90% painted, I used natural medium and transferred them into the computer. Then I apply all the colors I need to get it done. Same for the statue of liberty, there's no photos at all.

It depends of what I need, sometimes I want the textures to take over the image, sometimes I let the colors speak...I like it when the image has some realism.

Speaking of Travis, my favorite illustration is Roundhouse Tapes, it resumes well the talent he has. I have done nothing like that...What does he drinks to be good like that?

Speaking of Roundhouse Tapes...check this out...

Long ago, I dont remember when, before he designed Roundhouse, I made this piece, which was never exposed until now.

I think it's pretty common for artists to have similar ideas, we listen to the same music and our brain works almost the same way.

And before Novella Reservoir was out, (and Travis may confirm it), he had noticed a photo-montage I made (a man on an island holding an umbrella, blue tones everywhere) and Novella was ready to be released, but not yet.
And yeah the concept was so close! (but he has done better)

Anyway, this is just funny how we can have the same ideas hehe
