Has anyone ever heard Per speak?

Yes. He and I had a nice little chat after their last show at the L.A. HOB a couple of months ago. I don't honestly know if he's Swedish... he had a mild accent, but not really noticeable and certainly not an obstacle to having a conversation. Frankly, he was a really cool guy.

Ok, then.... Back to Mendez.

Out.

He may be short but I'm quite sure he has the biggest penis in Opeth.

It's very hard to comment on this topic because I'm not entirely sure who writes the majority of the bass lines in Opeth. If we go with Mendez, then i really have to say I respect him.

He finds ways to add interest to bass lines under very heavy metal guitars, which almost as a rule of thumb overpower the bass guitars and have them serving more of an auxillary purpose.

The great thing is that he doesn't over-do it, like in the Orchid/Morningrise era, nor does he think he's another guitarist. He plays bass like a bassist and makes it fit the rest of the band damn well.

The more time goes on, the more engineers seem to realize that they can put his bass playing up in the mix without destroying anything, like you would in most metal bands where the bassist is chugging away at identical riffs to the guitars.

I like him because his contributions to the band are tasteful if nothing else.

and again, cos it hasn't been said in a while...

He sure is good to look at. I met him two nights ago in Auckland, I never imagined that he'd be so much hotter in the flesh! Mmmmmmmmendez...

he is a dream bassist (at least for me, you guys with the "huge" bass knowledge of yours dont attempt to bash me in the first place) and also a damn nice guy cus he kept me giving metalhhorns during the gig (thanks to my talented headbanging unlike his:p) and he signed my ticket when i wanted him to. great guy indeed

Mendez has a beautiful technique. The qhole head movement side to side. He learned a new one tho. the windmill :D

judging by the recent aussie tour i would say that he has cut down a bit on his trademark side-to-side technique and now is just hanging low or windmilling, but whatever, he rules.

I don't think it's so hard to guess who's behind the bass lines... I mean the riffs are written by Mike and the bass has to be similar right? But I'm convinced all those ornaments that make my spine shiver come from TEH BASSPLAYAH himself - he adds even more of them live and they are in the same vein and style so it has to be him! Also, I love the way he cooperates with the drums... I consider him better than DeFarfalla who was just a big showoff - wanking almost every fucking second of the song! Mendez seldom boasts his talent in a song, but when he does - the feeling is way better!

Mendez for president!

Mendez certainly pwns all the N00bs. I liked in the Lamentations documentary when he was trying to do that fill in Deliverance and finally got it after a bunch of tries. Honesty! He's still great, though.

I bet that was the first time he had ever tried to play it, too.

ghost of perdition...thats all i have to say. and yes, it is nice that mindez was brought up in the mix in GR. he is pretty audible in bwp and damnation too. deliverance....not so much.
