Your Top 5 Bass Guitarists Of All Time

I agree it doesnt make him better or worse, but it's less impressive to me if someone doesn't write their own lines. I like mendez a lot, i can tell he's a really good basis, but i personally like bassists more than do their own thing.

Mike doesnt write the bass lines you knob. Jesus christ, what are you on. Martin Lopez writes 90% of the drum parts, cuz mike uses his drum machine for things and if he really loves a beat and Lopez doesnt think it should change he Keeps it as it is. Where have you found this information or did you just make it up?!

Geez, surely most of what people are saying is compatible - Mike comes up with a song, says its in such-and-such a key, it kind of goes like this (...) and has this feel etc., the other guys pick it up and run with it to a greater or lesser degree. Music overall by Mike, everyone makes a contribution.

I seem to remember Peter talking about coming up with a s couple of solos on the Lamentations documentary as well. I think Mike writes some things and if someone has something better they use that instead...?

I feel confident in saying that mike writes pretty much all the bass parts, you knob. The drums are a different story, im sure he has a feel for beats, but lopez is such a good drummer you can feel his unique style in things. THe bass parts are a different story. THe way i think it works from all the info i've gathered about the song writing process is that mike has want he wants for all the bass, then shows mendez. Mendez will pretty much play that, but if he really doesnt want to, he'll give him his own idea, and they'll figure out which works best. BUt i would say overall, mike takes care of what basslines youre hearing. I think that mendez is a really good bassists, plays the lines really well, and if he does indeed offer his own input often, i like what he's done. I don't even know how this got so strung out, all i was saying weas that i favor guys that write all their shit over guys that rely mostly on someone else to write it. If you don't think mike writes most of the bass, i suggest you read some interviews and watch lamentations a little more closely. Also dive into the studio diaries. Fin.

yeah dude. Mike definitely doesn't write all the bass parts. Mendez has his own style - if you can't hear that, you must be functionally retarded.

I'm just as stubborn as everyone else is being. Until mikael tells me i'm wrong, i think i'm right. If i do get proven wrong, i'll feel like a complete jackass and issue a forthright apology to my forum brethren.

as good as Mikael is as a guitarist and musician, i don't think he's capable of playing bass like mendez does (just listen to HF, Mikael cannot write that kind of stuff in bass... it takes LOTS of knowledge on bass to come up with thtat)

Fair enough, I just got the impression from all the stuff i've read and seen that mike writes it, but i could be wrong. I dont want it to get lost in all of this that I think mendez is an awesome bassist!

indeed, alot of jazz bass knowledge

I doubt it. Being able to do fills has nothing to do with knowing how to play jazz, it has to do with knowing what will sound good. If you have a lot of jazz bass knowledge then you'll be BETTER at it but it sure isn't necessary (i mean, look at flea :p).

I hate not having a net connection in my new place, i miss out on threads like this! :(

Id have to say that my favorite metal bassist would be Mendez, he definatly has a good groove and knows how to work it with metal.

Favorite funk bassist, Randy Hope Taylor, a true inovator without being rediculously weird and losing the point of playing bass. (GREAT SOLOS)
His work with Incognito is amazing.

Jens Johanson, keyboardist. Does some great jazz fusion bass lines in his music with his synths. Heavy Machinary rocks.

And favorite for technicallity, Stephan Fimmers, hes tech, hes melodic, hes a groover he does all this in a tech death band.

Ive never been big on pastorious, i think he has been hyped up way to much over the years. Plus i never really "got" that sort of jazz and jazz scene and the way he used his bass.

PS i hate being called a bass guitarist, because im not. I am a bassist.

The reason why Jaco is rated so highly is because he brought "lead" bassplaying to the forefront, pretty much.
