YOUR TOP 5 GUITARISTS OF ALL TIME

Hendrix - off the charts (any number of examples)

Yamashita - japanese classical virtuoso, I mention him every time. Just youtube him, that's all there is to it. (the famous one is Pictures at an Exhibition)

Buckethead - pure originality, all the talent in the world, nobody else has such a brilliant range of styles (Big Sur Moon a stunning piece, Binge & Grab has the perfect solo)

Tony MacAlpine - technical genius, superb melody, like if Bach played the electric (nothing stands out)

Charlie Hunter - 8-string (lately 7-string) jazz mastermind, nobody has a fuller sound (Dance of the Jazz Fascists)

Dave Gilmour -
Incredible feeling in his solos and also very experimental especially obvious on meddle
SM: Mother / Comfortably Numb

Joe Satriani -
Impecable paying ability, uses the guitar almost like a voice. Inventive and tuneful, one can literally whistle some of his solos. Again, brilliant emotion and feel.
SM: Ice 9

Mike Akerfeldt -
Original chord progression and lovely feeling in solos. Solos match the mood of each song perfectly, much the in same way as Gilmour does. Fantastic acoustic work, contrasted by sheer brutality.
SM: Ghost of Perdition

Jimi Page -
Amazing range of styles, what hasn't been said already about this guy. OK, lazy and not flawless in a tech sense, but creativity unsurpassed.
SM: Despite being corny these days, work on Stairway is still fantastic, esp the solo. Kashmir.

Marty Friedman -
Stylistically amazing, mid-eastern influences make him stand out, flawless live. Excellent feel and again matches the mood of the song.
SM: Anything from Rust in Peace

tough this, since i had to leave out Skolnick and Loomis.

I'm too much of a n00b to mention 5, but Tommy Emmanuel is one hell of an acoustic player (and since he started out with the electric he can shred on that one too on the few occasions he uses one, nowadays.) He is a great songwriter too; here's a few of my favourites:

Steve Howe - Versatile and awesome while being fun to watch.

John Petrucci - I know he wanks a lot, but it would be unfair to say that's all he does...listen to the solo on the song Repentance off their new album.

Guthrie Govan - Ever since I heard about this guy (from this board), I've been amazed by what he can do. He can play fuckin fast, but can still be very emotional.

Alex Lifeson - This guy's been mentioned a lot already, so no explanation needed.

Steve Hackett - I love all his work with Genesis.

Ok :

1. Papa Het : Best Right Hand in the Fucking world right here. He changed the way metal is played. Period.

2. Chuck Shuldiner : One of the most creative players in Metal, always trying to push the enveloppe album after album.

3. John Petrucci : Best thing associated with the name shred. Wrote killer Epic tracks and solo like no one esle.

4. Alex Lifeson : His body of work speaks for himself.
The ultimate Prog rock guitar player IMO.

5. Mikael Akerfeldt : 'nough Said.

But 5 is not enough :

Dimebag Darell
Biréli Lagrene
Paco De lucia
Dave murray/Adrian Smith
Paul Gilbert
Matthew Bellamy
Jimmy Page
Pat Metheny
Hendrix
Ritchie Blackmore
Marty Friedman/ Dave mustaine
The Priest Guys
Eddy
Malmsteen
Vernon Reid
Jeff Hanneman ( wrote all Slayer classics, King is a fraud.)

Well, here's mine:

Randy Rhoads
Ritchie Blackmore
Zakk Wylde
John Petrucci
Michael & Christopher Amott (impossible to pick one of them)

Others are:
Corey Beaulieu
Ralph Santolla
Muhammed Suicmez
Alex Skolnick
Glenn Tipton
John 5

2. Bill Frisell: Like Thompson, one of those guys who plays notes that I don't seem to have on my guitar. Fantastic phrasing, hip tones, ridiculous improvisations.

Fucking fantastic mention!

I loathe topcs like this, since I can't possibly choose only 5 with all the different genres I love, AND I have to consider my own personal attachments to certain guitarists' styles and bodies of work...and yet...I can't help but reply.

Fucking hell man, I love Bill Frisell, but I can't list him in my 5, since I have one or two emotional picks. But know that I thought hard about it. And since you already mentioned him, it's not like he hasn't gotten a spot anywhere. :p

1. Reine Fiske.
He plays with so much feeling I cry like a baby almost every time I see him on stage. He's not the most technical, but then again, technicality isn't what he's all about. It's all about releaseing that wonderful, melancholic soul within.

2. Trey Spruance.
Because he's nuts, no matter what instrument he picks up. If he's not one of The Invisibles walking among us, I dont know who is.

3. Fredrik Thordendal.
What can I say other than I like having my brains mashed sometimes.

4. Michael Åkerfeldt.
Don't think that needs any explanation.

5. Uffe Cederlund.
An emotional pick for me. He's magic in his own special little way.

Of course, my list is way longer, including perps such as Robert Fripp, Nicky Skopelitis, Mieszko Talarczyk, Nicklas Barker, Buzz Osborne, Hans Magnus "Snah" Ryan, Bill Frisell, ALex Lifeson and many more. But it'd take ages to list them all.

3+ pages, on a metal board, and Buckethead has gotten one tiny mention.

I like his work quite a lot too...my favourite is probably an album by him in his manifestation as Death Cube K (anagram for Buckethead) called "Dreamatorium", where it's basically just him and Bill Laswell (love him!). I like the bass being used only for atmosphere, and the guitaring reminds me of when I shared an appartment with a guitarist, and listening to him fiddle on his guitar late at night. Parts are really beautiful, and other parts are really tense and moody. Not for everyone, I guess, but I love it.
