I'm sure there's an incredibly educated answer, but I'll go out on a limb and prove my ignorance by saying it's because they're so speech-impaired they need an "oi" group (no, not a band of skinheads) to get the sound right from the original French. I mean, think how they'd say it if it was spelled "ai", then shudder.

It doesn't improve it, but with the "ai" group an English speaker would pronounce the word the same way as, say, "rain", which is wrong and - frankly - a little scary. At least with the "oi" group they go for either a "ua" or an "o" sound.

Yes, tourists are like kings there. Tourism is the major money source for the country. I spoke with cubans, situation is bad but better than it used to be. They could afford only the minimum to live. I gave stuff to the hotel staff and money to the girl who cleans the rooms...
