In all fairness, Mike did say in his biography that upon forming Opeth they set out to be the most evil band in the worldfail and than he was more or less influenced by the occult back then.

I think they probably tried then realised that no matter what they did, short of all killing each other in a varitey of horrible ways, they'd never up stage Mayhem on the "evilness" front so gave up.
