The official FIFA World Cup Deutschland 2006 Thread

A funny thing is happening here in Mexico. We're having elections next week and, obviously, certain candidates have been trying to use the WC to their favor... however, as Mexico's performance has been more than pitiful, abstentionism seems to be going up and those guys might be losing a few votes. And I'm happy, 'cause they're conservatives. Just thought I'd mention it.

Nobody here has got the least hope that Mexico will beat Argentina on the 8ths. And I'm relieved, because that way nobody's out on their cars honking like they were crazy, annoying the fuck out of us non-fans and getting drunk and killing people. So yeah, I'm happy.

Hehe, I could say it happens only every four years (every two EURO included), but that would probably piss you off even more, knowing the nature of the tifossi (sp?), who probably honk merrily (or angrily) on any occasion. :)

tifosi. but no, they seldom make as much fuss as on this occasion. it's more that this country/city always has plenty of opportunities to hinder and thwart the working man's job, and i already find it hard to condone the serious reasons (strikes, celebrations that actually have some meaning, etc...). it's insufferable that society has to give its barbarians games to keep them from, say, stealing my property, by allowing them to masturbate noisily over the perils of a bunch of retarded, drugged-up "athletes" kicking each other in the nuts.

yet, again, this has nothing to do with soccer itself or with people enjoying a game. the phenomenon, however, i despise.

Haha too bad for the conservatives, I guess tis good that they won't win. Is Vincente Fox a conservative...? Also, can he be re-elected? And did he do a good job...?

Haha of course Mexico won't be able to beat Argentina, Argentina will kick their ass.

Damn, Japan lost 4 -1 tp Brazil    . I really wanted them to win, and I was really happy when they were 1 - 0. But, as usual Brazil scored a goal in the last minutes of the 1st half. I'm beggininng to think they do it on purpose.

Anyway, I hope Brazil doesn't go any further :heh: , they don't deserve it.

Well, of course they do, thats the difference between worse and better teams - teams like Japan play very well, but in the overtime their concentration fails for a second and thats when teams like Brazil score, because they are able focus till the referee whistles.

It was clearly visible, that they were enjoying the match so much more, because there was no stress of obligatory win etc., I hope they will also play this wonderful football in 8finals.

Yes, Fox is a conservative; no, thank god he cannot be re-elected; and no, he hasn't done a remotely good job. I'm hoping for the leftist guy to win here.

And why do you hate Mexico so much? Just because it is the leader of the supremely mediocre CONCACAF and beats your even more mediocre team in every game? :loco:

Bullshit. Netherlands sucked, especially for the last 15 minutes. Annoying lobs from mid-field and nothing inventive at all, just lob, turn-over, lob, turn-over, scoring chance, turn-over, lob, fuck up, lob and a couple more lobs.
I wasn't paying much attention on the first half though, but Portugal must have done something right since they managed to score one.
I'm sure Rusty appreciated all the nasty sliding tackles. :p Rough game. I still don't care much though.

Ok thanx for the info.

Well, the thing is that they act like they're so good, but as you said they suck big time. And in general I don't like mexicans, no offense to you, you seem like a nice lad :) .

I have/had? a mexican friend in my German class, but now I'm starting to hate me. There is only one mexican person I will never hate, and she is a good friend of mine hehe. She's maybe just as sick as I am, LOL, she, me and a friend, we created something that is called "La Trifuerza del Hentai" .

Again, I mean no offense to you.

Now coming back to the games, I only saw a part of the game between England and Ecuador, but I'm glad England won hehe. Great shot by Beckham, at last he does something.

Hehe the game between Nederlands and Portugal was quite funny, lost of kicks  . Though I wanted Nederlands to win  . Oh well, I still have... damn, no team to go with.

From now on I'll go with Argentina and Ghana.

Sweet Jeeezus, what a game that was! Ivanov is a fucking looser and shouldnt be allowed to whistle again. Four red cards! It was all the more incredible to me, cause I had my 5th beer at the beginning of the second half, so I thought I was watching some 6th Serbian killing spree league match, the performance of the referee included (Cuthalion knows what Im talking about). The only thing missing were crowds bursting onto the pitch and beating up the players, referee, themselves and everything. Wow, what a mess!

I dont know, it seemed to me like he was a bit benevolent in the 1st half, and then things got out of hand, and he started pulling yellow and red cards like a maniac. Maybe I was too cruel, and the beers also mightve influenced my impression. Well, he was definitely better than Graham Poll.

Yes, but those yellow and red fouls cannot be viewed as separate events through the optics of the rules only. The referee must do his best to prevent these events from actually happening. The best thing is to give a yellow or two at the very beginning, where the players test the referees benevolence. Then they have clear borders and usually dont cross them.

No, that's exactly the wrong way to go about it. If you give yellow cards early on, you're basically forcing yourself to carry on giving yellow cards for similar tackles throughout the game. That's exactly what this ref did: one booking after 90 seconds, another after 7 minutes, and then he just couldn't stop.

It's much better to give players warnings to begin with, say "cut out these bad fouls or you'll go in the book". That goes much further to calm the players down than flashing the yellow card straight away, which only ever gets players (and fans) more riled up. If players don't heed the warnings, then you book them. As long as you treat each team equally, it'll go much more smoothly. If last night's ref had've done this, there's no way there would've been four sendings off and twenty thousand bookings, or whatever the number was.

EDIT: It should be added that maybe the players didn't help the referee at all by diving so much, but the referee didn't help himself by giving the players that window to get an opposition sent off. I really wish FIFA would go back over games and apply yellow cards retroactively to blatant dives, like Robben (and others, but last night he was the worst) kept doing. Other than straight violence, like hitting people, diving is the worst thing in football.
