a distro, or a distribution of linux refers to the organisation/company that packages linux under a brand name, as linux in itself is not owned by anyone in particular.. its freeware and open source under GNU.

some famous flavours available: slackware, debian, fedora, ubuntu, etc.

to you bluewizard, i recommend ubuntu.
