The rip of "The Grand Conjuration"

Sounds like maybe that Roadrunner rep shouldn't have been allowed to play it on Sirius in the first place.

Yep, and they played another song according to LFAJ, right? Maybe they should have waited too, but probably wasn't Opeth's decision where as they can kinda control what goes on the forums.

So the 20-page-thread is gone?

Oh well, it's understandable. However, the song WAS played on public radio, and you would think the people at Sirius would have given some consideration to the fact that by putting it out there for the public to hear, they were enabling people with sufficient motivation/technology to rip and/or spread the song.

I really don't think this is going to affect album sales, though. One track (rip quality at that) probably isn't enough to base an impression of the whole album on, especially for the diehard Opeth fans that hang out here. If anything, my curiosity is piqued.

welll I'm glad I downloaded it when I did. Shame though it is such a crappy rip. It takes away from the intensity that I'm sure is there on the professional recording. Still though - I've been really really really waiting for some new material, and I couldn't resist.

I am pleased.

That crappy rip made 20 000 people open up their eyes for Opeths new album. And that happend over just a few days.

That`s good marketing.

I think most of those people were Opeth fans anyway.

Nice to finally hear something from the higher ups around here (MetalAges AND Opeth.com), even if it is just telling us off.

I dont think most people really thought downloading that mp3 was anything bad though, being a radio-rip...we just considered it fair game, made freely available to all.

the news shocked me because for the longest time there was the sharing of Opeth boots on here, from shows and TV appearances and nothing was done. perhaps that was the problem?

Thats what annoys me...we are just guessing. It would be alot of help if opeth.com would tell us whats ok and what is not ok. Are they fine with those bootlegs, from older cds, or will they just get someone banned?

i would hope for a clearer statement as well. at least no one will be banned without getting a warning which gives everybody a fair chance imo...

Heh, I don't know about that. If that were true you shouldn't it be legal to download any song that was ever played on the radio?

No, the difference is the quality. Its different downloading CD quality stuff, and downloading a recording of a low quality radio broadcast.

There's nothing illegal going on with the rip, its a shame that the powers that be cant understand the marketing potential that MP3s have.

If MP3s didnt exist / were never invented, do you think Opeth would have the fanbase it does now? They'd be nowhere. In fact they'd have probably split up because of financial problems. The same goes for a lot of bands...

It seems like this forum is being ruled with an iron fist, ie 'you will talk about opeth or NOTHING AT ALL' and it kind of sucks when online communites get like that. The forum used to be a lot better than this.

I'm pretty pissed I heard it actually, as I know I'd enjoy it much more if it was the real thing in all it's amazingly produced glory.

It's not like the Ålmighty or Anna picked up the phone and told me this directly, but it seems very clear to me that the issue is NOT MONEY, but rather the quality of the file that was being passed around. Noone here can dispute the poor quality and I think you would have a hard time winning an argument that it "Doesn't matter" w/ any member of the band who poured their blood, sweat and tears into an artistic project which depends heavily on the quality of the presentation. I think Salvador Dali would not appreciate people getting a first impression of one of his paintings from an out of focus polaroid picture... understand? I think they are trying to say, "We understand and appreciate your enthusiasm, but please wait for the finished product... we think it's worth the wait!"
