The "Those of us who frequent this forum" thread

Sorry for my absence around here of late. I'm meeting up with Justin S today for cakes and ontology in Chicago. I will be able to post more regularly from next week.

And a good meeting it was! ...although I'm kinda pissed I didn't get any cake, unless that's what you call those stale little "biscuits" you had crumbled in your pocket.

I would've loved to have been there. A Heideggerian feast Im sure.

Seriously, I think its cool people on a philosophy forum are meeting. We were talking about religion before (and all the time), and the one thing religion has going for it, is community. Perhaps we need philosophical communities? This is what happened in the past: coffee houses and salons were rife with philosophical discussion.

Have you read A (Ridiculous) Theory of Justice?

Certainly one of the most absurd and preposterous pieces of writing I have come across, and thats no small feat.

Oh, I do enjoy reading hilariously retarded liberal "philosophy"(?). I must pick this up!

In conclusion, the modern university is a cesspool of faggotry and Judaism disguised as higher learning.

Perfectly put. But I can't see much of an alternative in my future, sadly; beyond tramping around the US, which I've given a lot more than a passing consideration ... Suppose university taken with the right perspective can be positive, as long as you don't actually learn (believe) what they are teaching, but rather learn from what they are trying to teach.

Don't misunderstand me. I'm all for your right to hold whatever view you fancy. I was merely inquiring into whether or not I'm allowed to hurl insults at you in this forum.

I'd love to see you try to insult Prozak (or whoever it is).

*ankle-biting time*

Well, its not Prozak, it's our buddy "Laeth MacLaurie" and I'm sure he finds it hilarious that he will forever be assumed to be the former.

speed,

Nile and I were discussing the possibility of a future meeting of all three of us, as it is likely that he and I will be in the general area during the next year or so. I look forward to it (a little tag team ontology on your ass). ;)

p.s. I apologize for my insufferable "cuteness" tonight... I have been enjoying my homebrew!

I prefer my ass to retain its ontological virginity. HEhe

But I'd love to meet you two guys. I'd love to get Prozak there too. Well, theres many regulars I'd love to meet (Oldscratch, norsemaiden, murai, derek, and so many more).

It would indeed be very interesting to meet face to face, as I much prefer proper conversation to these cyber-snippets of communication(and often miscommunication)we bandy about here. Of course the fact that we're scattered all over the globe doesn't help in all this...

No it doesnt help at all does it. But I think we'd all prefer a good face to face conversation over some form of liquor or stimulant. Perhaps Justin will open up his philosophy brew pub, and we'll all have a place to drop by. A philosophical Cheers if you will: for amateurs, dilletantes, classicalists, continentalists, and analyticals alike.

The modern university has it's share of issues, but accusing faculty of seeking some sort of fast-track towards big bucks is ludicrous when you take into account how difficult it is to find a job that pays more than $70,000 per year (and thats after at least a decade of academic work with virtually no pay). Of course there's ego and pissing contests in academia, and that's essentially the way it's always been.

I'd like to see what it is that people here identify as Jewish faggotry. My experience so far has been very positive, with very few faculty members regardless of department seeking to teach anything that seems blatantly biased or fiercely promoting one single viewpoint. About the only thing I've found common is that they all criticize George W. Bush, and I don't see that as a negative. My epistemology professor is a proponent of an infinitist theory of justification (in fact, the leading proponent). Yet he refuses to cover this view, which he feels strongly about, because it is beyond the scope of an introductory epistemology course. Just one example.

Ive had nothing but positive and wonderful experiences with Jews. In fact, a very good friend of mine is Jewish. They're sort of the scapegoats/bugaboos of the world. Although, the Israelis arent helping things any.

Its all about choosing the "hot" field. My brother is a computer engineer/IT specialist, and is about to graduate undergrad. He's already got a job, doubling mine. Obviously, accounting, IT, engineering, MBA, medicine, all are fields with big paychecks.

What's the name of your professor? I think he may have been mentioned in my epistemology class because my teacher said something about infinitism and then said that there's only one guy who defends the view (I guess because the view seems crazy), but I don't remember the name of the guy.

Its hypocrtical and unconscionable that jews could support the racist and militaristic aims of Israel. But, I suppose one becomes what one hates.

I'm still much more afraid of plump, bible-thumping middle class Americans who listen to O'Reilly and Hannity, gobble up Cracker Barrel, shop at Wal Mart, think philosophy or culture is Mitch Albom's Tuesdays with Morrie, and watch CSI and American Idol.

Why? American couch potatos are unorganized, unmotivated, and have no goals to speak of. They're dangerous only inasmuch as the US is a representative democracy and they've got a lot of aggregate voting power. The real threat, as always, comes from those with power, money, and an agenda. Let's face it, Uncle Sam McFatty is only dangerous when he's got Jewy Jewberg dictating his voting priorities. And given that the real sources of power in the US (the major political parties, the education system and the Infotainment Industrial Complex) are all wholly owned subsidiaries of ZOG, Inc., it ain't the unwashed and the uncircumcized who are the dangerous ones.

The professor's name is Peter Klein, and yes, he's one of the few proponents of an infinitist theory of justification. But his most famous paper is a pretty rigorous refutation of skepticism. Pretty brilliant guy but until I learn more about infinitism I don't think I can say I find it plausible. My school's philosophy department is full of brilliant wackos like him.

I probably wouldn't have put it quite so bluntly, or phrased it just that way myself...but I would be lying if said that wasn't also the first thing that came to my mind reading Speed's post.
