The "Those of us who frequent this forum" thread

Well, it was March up there so it is pretty bleak! Was up there for a Geography trip and it was such a laugh. I reckon thats one of the greatest things about technology: being able to get random pictures of whatever with your phone that actually turn out good!

Thanks for the comments. I will probably have some more pictures of mountains sometime in the near future, me and a friend are hoping to go up Loch Nagar when he gets a job (for petrol money) so I'll hopefully see some nice sights!

Norsemaiden, it's good to be back, thanks! Not too sure about the exams, the Advanced Highers seemed to go better than the Highers which is crazy. Will just have to wait and see I guess.

I am sure you will be entirely fine. Universities are suprisingly easy to get into these days, and I'm more that convinced you're one of the more able :)

Cheers! Well, I'm pretty much into Edinburgh anyway (which is my planned destination) as I only needed another B at higher and as I can appeal for a good B I guess I'm sorted. But yes, I agree, they are pretty easy to get into, which sucks for the smarter kids who deserve it more.

I shall be in Edinburgh next year too. Perhaps I shall bump into you.

The targets set by the government for kids going into higher education are complete madness. Half of them don't deserve to be here, and the half that do are being screwed financially because the sheer numbers attending have instigated the whole crippling loan system, as opposed to non repayable grants and bursaries.

It's crazy how many people I know are going to Edinburgh either this year or next. Whatcha gonna be doing there? You can buy me a drink!

It's gonna be crap for graduates too, cos so many people will have a degree it won't mean much anymore and so employers will be looking for Masters and stuff..crap. Will hopefully have a laugh though.

An immense amount of people head to Edinburgh every year. I'm just moving there to live with some friends. Still working in Glasgow, but I don't need to be here all that much, and I have more fun in Edinburgh. Also, you can buy me a drink! That's definately more like it :p

Well yeah, I was gonna say that. Post Grads are now on the increase, which means that they - like a degree - will eventually mean less, as more and more folks take them. I'm sure you'll have a great time, first year at University is absolutely madness. I'll probably see you at sometime in potter row or teviot (edinburgh's unions) but I dare say I won't recognise you at all.

It's our nations capital. It has a less dangerous or trashy image than Glasgow does, and it also hosts one of the country's finest Universities. I'd argue Glasgow offers more and is distinctly more Scottish, but Edinburgh is a beautiful city, lots to do and see.

Yes it's not too far to drive in to Glasgow for you really. How's your work going these days? I guess I could buy you a drink, but I'm going to be a poor student whereas you help to teach the poor students (I think) so you can buy the drinks :p

I really can't wait, so much so that I kinda regret not going this year, but I know College is a wise idea. I just want to get away now and start somewhere fresh. I guess life won't be too much different down there though, probably still get the same problems, just with different people.

I think they should do something about the number of people who go to uni, I mean, it's abnormal to not go to uni these days, but it used to be the other way round. Having said that, it's cool that so many people from all backgrounds have the chance of going if they want to.

Well merit should dictate who gets in and who does not. It weeds out the idiots and time wasters, and with the reduced numbers EVERYONE who deserves to be in higher education can go, regardless of social status, and they will be financially supported without having to end up in thousands of debt.

What institution are you going to? It genuinely is a fresh start. It's a complete freedom, liberating and exciting.

Yup, Glasgow is not far away at all. My work is going fine, I'm knee deep in researching the concept of the archetypal Roman citizen and the notion of "the old times" within Ancient Athens, although it's winding down now as I head to Rome soon, before doing some house sitting and finally moving to Edinburgh come August.

I suppose I could buy you a drink. Be warned I tend to get ridiculously fucked up whenever I'm out though :p

you said "every year"and i thought you meant people going to the colleges in the city of Edinburgh, and i couldn't understand why those colleges were better than others in Europe. i didn't realize you were talking about tourism

I'm not, necessarily. Only outlining why people choose Edinburgh over other University Cities. I also would not label Edinburgh as one of the *best* in Europe, it is good, though.

so i guess it's kinda like how the people that grow up across the street from the Houston Universities will get out of high school and go to the colleges in Dallas instead of going to college across the street from where they're already living

Yes, merit should dictate who gets in, so it would seem the problem lies in the fact that it's stupidly easy to get the grades to get into uni.

The only thing I'm bothered about with going to uni next year is how much my friends will have changed. I mean, of course everyone changes, but if I go down there and don't recognise them (personality wise) it's gonna really suck. Having said that, change is inevitable and has to be dealt with when it does happen. I'm gonna be in the Humanities department.

Sounds like you're gonna be pretty busy these next few months then :)

Such enthuisiam to spend your cash  I'll just let you buy me a couple of drinks before disappearing, leaving you to getting fucked up :p

People do change and relationships change reciprocally, so it is inevitable your friends will change. Use the opportunity to make new friends and explore the new situations that can be experienced with the old ones. It's a great time. Nostalga gets at me a great deal, too.

Yup, busy bee for the next while.

Also, what makes you think I won't get you fucked up too? I have that affect on people. ;)
