Are Tearstained starting to go down the shitter? I haven't really been keeping up with them but the few songs I heard off their most recent album were rather weak.

The last one was really inconsistent. This one isn't all that promising thus far either. I don't know what to think...

I would call them heavy metal. Doom metal is a bit of a stretch but there are certainly doom influences in their music.
