Once you get split ends, just trim those off and it should grow faster. That's what I've heard.

No this does not make sense, hair is a made up of dead cells, and therefore cannot grow again once it dies. once a tree is cut and dead, the trunk doesn't keep growing does it? Cutting split ends gives the illusion of a faster cut because the hair that won't die at that length will continue to grow, while the dead ones will just stay there
