The what's going on in Thrash thread

Oh. Sorry. I mean Impact. I haven't gotten to it because I started cooking.

Man that is harsh. And you're right Habit wasn't out yet lol.

You should listen to Fistfull Of Metal like I did :P

I could understand the comment if it was about Force Of Habit, but even if you hate Impact Is Imminent saying it's forgettable is a stupid comment. If nothing else the cover looks cool :)

Hehe. That all sounds right.
I had noticed that about their songs on youtube. The video versions of their song seem much higher. But that's true for just about all them which I think evens it out and Anthrax is still the lowest over all. They ave some great stuff. but they really seem like they were kind of in the right places at the right times.

The official video I was looking at for Exodus, (for Bonded) has been around since 2016, but it's got 600K viewers and 10K likes. I don't really take that as gospel or as a real indication of popularity but it's still a massive difference to Anthrax.

The albums that followed FOM are well deserved of thrash metal praise, but if it wasn't for Johnny Z I doubt they'd have broken with FOM or it's follow up if they kept Neil.

Ummmmm. Nah. I just ate.

Yeah me too. I just finished Lunatic Parade. I'm not sure If I'll get through it all tonight. I have mixed feelings. It's not bad at all. There is maybe something off. But I can't really place it. Maybe the speed? Maybe some of the solos aren't that great. But the rest are pretty damn good. I like Zetro's voice a lot. I wish he still sounded like this. I guess some of the songs are lacking a bit of hook maybe. But it's a thrasher for sure.
It's certainly not forgettable to me. 30 years later I've never forgotten the title track or that cover.
I miss this tuning. Especially in the solos. They don't sound like they are strung with rubber bands.
Yes. I think some songs are bit to chuggy for Exodus.

No I don't think so either. They owe Johnny. A lot of people do. But they REALLY owe Johnny lol.

It seems like the production is not great. If I put Impact in the player with any other Exodus CD I find myself reaching for the volume control because Impact just isn't as loud as the rest. I think the song writing is a little different on Impact too, maybe not quite as mature. Not so much the topics but the way the words are strung together, it seems like easy rhyming.

I wonder what it was that Johnny saw in them that kept him pushing. Obviously they improved after FOM and they did make a big impact on metal, but looking at the original band compared to what they were when they found their footing is a big difference.

Changing Of The Guards has some pretty cool music.
I think Only Death Decides is right up there as well.

I think the whole album is quite good from a song point of view. They are easy songs to understand the words and they flow quite well making them easy to remember. Sure there is parts that might not be "Big4" quality :) but there is still a lot on that album that I think deserves attention.

Interesting guitar work does not always equal more interesting songs!

Of course not, but in Exodus's case I think many times it did,

I think another aspect that hurt Exodus was poor album covers. Were there any other thrash bands in the 80s that were putting the band on the cover of nearly every album? And then there was Force of Habit which looks like they Xeroxed a desk covered in shitty graffiti.

That's probably true and a good point.

That's kind of odd. Usually I would expect the albums before to sound worse. There are some exceptions though, and I guess this is one of them!
One thing I noticed is Zetro uses that evil laugh a lot.

Maybe he was just sick of them bugging him lol. Didn't he turn them down a few times?

Edit: Haha I didn't see the posts from you guys. I think we have a consensus!

It's like Impact was recorded on 7 and the rest were recorded on 10. I have a few CD's like that which I always put down to being early CD's remastered off old tapes, but listening to Impact on YT seems to be the same. There is something about Impact and it's release that has stopped them re-releasing it. Impact and Force and the only two albums released under Capitol (from memory) and I think I remember Gary suggesting they can't be re-released under current licensing deals. Maybe it was just the different production teams and studios that dulled the sound.

Zetro's laugh is really cool when it's used right!

Yeah I think Johnny might have turned them down a few times, and you can see why. Neil's voice just does not cut it in the music they were trying to make. They also might well have matured a bit with song writing and the like between the demos and when they finally convinced Johnny they had something. But I think once Johnny worked out a way to get Neil away from the band he knew there was something else worth working with.

Yeah now that I think of it there are other bands that have albums like that. Flotsam first two sounded pretty good whereas WTSCD didn't sound so good. The Cuatro and Drift albums sounded great but High didn't sound so great. Same with Testament. Kinda of all over the place until The Ritual. Then they're all pretty good.
Having a major label back then has really come to be a detriment to bands that didn't make it really big. They just can't get their albums back even though the label will never do anything with them.
There should be some kind of law that says if a label hasn't done anything with an album in 20 years that the band should have the opportunity to buy them back at a reasonable price.

Yeah his laugh is great and evil. But when you hear it on half the album it starts to sound a little silly.

Oh shit I think I just hit old age!! A politician sent me a leaflet saying he wanted to hear from people about what they think needs attention in the local area and I filled out his bloody survey!!
Why do I suddenly have the urge to listen to talk back radio?
