The what's going on in Thrash thread

Hey zero, do you like your thrash a bit black?
Have you heard Oxygen Destroyer? It's a bit darker and deathlier than usually gets mentioned around here but their two albums are some of the better black/death/thrash releases.

I can dig it. Will check them out. Read on FB that James Lomenzo has been named as a " permanent" bass player for Megadeth.

How long do you think he will last?

Like all fairy tales it will last forever and ever and ever! :)

I did think the same thing when I read it though. I don't really know that Dave had much choice either. I suppose there would still be people willing to play in Megadeth but with the new album coming out next month there is little need for a new bassist to be a part of the writing process. Then with both tours and future recordings no doubt being reliant on how well this album is received I wonder if even James can call it a long term gig.

Personally, if Jnr's not in the band I don't really care who the bass player is, but I do hope this album is worthy of at least one or two more from Dave.

If we get more albums of the same quality of Dystopia then I will be surprised, and happy!

Are you familiar with The Accused? I see they are touring with Deceased and are playing nearby in a couple of weeks.

I hope Dave has it in him for one or two more but I think this new one, which should be released soon, is going to define how much longer Megadeth will last.

I'm remember The Accused's first or second album More Fun That An Open Casket Funeral. I remember checking it out a few times when it was mentioned in the NP thread. I kind of liked it but I don't why I didn't look into more of their stuff.

I also haven't listened to a Deceased album in a very long time, although I saw the other day they have an album of thrash covers out. It looked like some interesting song choices on there.

I think you are right about the Deth...it has been what, six years since Dystopia?

I will see if I can find that Accused album you mentioned. Deceased is cool and I look forward to seeing them live.:headbang: The cover album does look interesting, too bad it isn't on Spotify.

Yeah 6 years. In between Dave's battled cancer, released a best of album and talked about a new album but released nothing. I suppose we can take out 2 years of covid, but it's still been 6 years and at 60 years old one has to wonder how much longer he wants to, or can do the live thing for.

I might look further into the Accused one day.
Thrash Times At Ridgemont High is on Bandcamp, I haven't listened to it yet but I was planning to.

Hopefully he still gets something out of it. I mean, I imagine he and Megadeth are one of the few metal bands doing well enough to hopefully be set financially for retirement. The guys in Slayer are in a similar situation, I imagine, and kudos to them for knowing when to call it a career.

I hope Dave knows when the time is right, no one wants their favourite band to turn into a parody of their stellar years.

I do laugh at the way Kerry was treated by so called fans when he moved house. Many seemed to forgive Tom for the retirement, he was struggling to play shows, but so many claimed Kerry was all about the money and when he bought that new house they all became real estate experts and rubbished Kerry for spending too much on the house.

I tend to agree, it feels like they have been phoning in the last few albums. I hope with people suggesting this has more of a death metal feel that it's going to be different to the last few. Jonathan said it's heavier than some of their previous stuff, but lets face it that's like saying "our new songs, you haven't heard, are really aggressive!"

Municipal Waste is pretty good, got some interesting scenes in the clip too :)

I've been giving The Accused a go. I don't know why I never gave these guys more of a chance before. Their style of thrash crossover is a lot like DRI with meaner vocals and just as silly songs. I think if you make the show with these guys you're going to see one hell on an energetic pit.

I used to really dig Amon Amarth from about 2003-2012. Still rock out to With Oden on Our Side and Twilight of the Thunder Gods.

New MW is good and that video is a throwback to 80s horror! :kickass: looking forward to their new release. Has the singer made any announcements about Iron Reagan? Been 5 years since their last album.

Doesn't appear to be much happening with IR. They haven't posted anything on social media since Feb 2020 and that was about "Crossover Ministry" (2017 album) which Relapse Records have since removed. And before that it was a 2019 post apologising for being associated with Rob, the bassist, since he was charged with sexual misconduct. Bandcamp has nothing new and there is nothing to suggest they split up, but there is also no news.

I've been listening to Deceased. They've got some good stuff but the vocalist is not someone I could listen to for long periods at a time. It's not that he's bad or anything it's just something about his tone on the early records (the ones I've listened too) that makes me want to hear something else by the end of the album.

Have you heard Oxygen Destroyer?
Listened to their album, Sinister Monstrosities Spawned by the Unfathomable Ignorance of Mankind. Goddamn! I thought Bal-Sagoth were the kings of verbosity! I liked it, but need to give it a few more spins until it fully grasps my mind.

I agree with everything you write about Deceased. I like their full embrace of the spooky, horror death metal aesthetic but think many of their songs could use some editing. The two albums I listen to the most often are Fearless Undead Machines and Surreal Overdose.

Oxygen Destroyer does need a few listens but the one thing they don't need is a dictionary :)

I'm starting to like more recent Deceased, I don't know if they changed vocalist, I haven't looked them up that closely yet, but while I've liked what I've heard I like the vocals more on As The Weird Travel On. I haven't listened to Surreal Overdose yet but I'll give that a go today. I love hearing those horror movie snippets and sound bites, some of them I recognise but not all of them.

Geezus! The opening track, Mrs Allardyce, from Ghostly White is a hell of a song. Together with Germ Of Distorted Lore, all 13 minutes of it, and it's a killer 20 minute opener to a new album.

Been a while since I listened to Ghostly White, I will have to spin it again soon!

Overall I think if you're going to see The Accused and Deceased you're in for a hell of a night. Both bands seem like they could put on a very energetic night of thrashing.

Kreator is out this Friday, be interesting to see how the entire album stands up.
