Have all the bay area bands plus Ovekill and flotsam and Jetsam. I would reckon that if something like this was being planned (even just the big 4) it would be fairly well organised by now. Slayer have got their final gigs listed, Megadeth have their schedule for next year, Anthrax are in the studio and Metallica are Metallica who wouldn't fit in with anyone. Such a gig would surely be scheduled by now.

As with all of these disputes it's a bit hard to know where the truth lies but I tend to think Riggs signed his own death warrant there. I'm not saying he was right or wrong but it seemed like Maiden and Smallwood made a statement then 10-15 years later Riggs came out and made one that was spiteful. Riggs' version might be the truth but to me it's the way he said it not what he said. It's hard to rebuild bridges when egos get hurt and I think both sides might be guilty of that now which will leave it difficult for Eddie to ever go back to his creator.

As the story I heard goes Rod Smallwood on behalf of the band, told Derek they wanted to modernise Eddie, bring him into the 00's and beyond. Whether they gave Derek the option to do that or not was not clear but at some point Rod told him they wanted to try new artists and possibly use a number of different artists. Derek apparently accepted the deal or didn't really have a choice. Then in about 2013 Derek came out saying that it was all ego driven because Eddie was more popular than the band and they wanted to lessen his role on the covers.
I don't know what role, if any, Steve had but Derek blamed him and Rod for the egos.
I also don't know how Eddie becoming more popular was an issue either because Eddie has always had a huge stage presence at the shows, and its even bigger now than it used to be. I think all the covers since Derek's departure have still featured Eddie heavily and the band still use the name Ed or Eddie on so much.
I don't know if Rod got personal and borderline offensive with anything he ever said on the matter but Derek kind of did in 2013 and I think that would be hard to come back from. I don't even know why he chose so long before making the statements he did.

Man that sucks. Eddie is a big part of Maiden, I can't even think of one without thinking of the other. As you say they've continued to use him heavily. But I like Riggs the best. Too bad that shit had to go down. also I don't think Eddy needed any sort of modernizing...whatever that means lol

Yeah I'm not sure what it means either given that Eddie usually took on the form that the album dictated not any kind of modern creature. There was the odd specialist Eddie who was there for a song or something like that but I'm fairly sure Eddie is drawn to the specs of the album not the date.
