Therion

Depends on what you want. Vovin or Theli seem like the best places to start. I thought Lemuria / Sirius B was a great double disc that has lots of epic chorus action and some fantastic stuff from Mats Levin. I thought Gothic Kabalah sucked teh big one!!11!one!LOLroflcopterlolerskates.Their first three albums are death metal to varying degrees (The debut slays), but that's probably not why most people get into therion.

For songs i'd recommend The Khdgoarirfjf Evangelist from lemuria or sirius b (ok, i don't remember right now... but its a sweet song), and basically all of vovin.

I've been a fan of Therion for 2+ years, and like Zach said, start at Theli and go onwards from there. Theli started the transition from death metal to Symphonic metal, and it rawks. Vovin, Sirius B, Lemuria, Deggial, Secret of the Runes, and Gothic Kabbalah are all excellent albums.

Therion - one of those bands that you either love or hate.
Music is unique and intense. I have to be in the mood, but there is nothing like cranking Therion up in the car for a nice drive.....kinda just takes you away.

Definitely worth checking them out.

Haha....I am surprised that Zach likes Lemuria/Sirius B. It just seems like it would be too operatic/chorusy for you. Oh well, sometimes things can be surprising I guess! I agree that Gothic Kabbalah is not very good. I don't absolutely hate it but it does feel lackluster. Something just feels off to me with it. I haven't listened to it in a while so I may be totally wrong, but, wasn't there a lot less metal guitar in it or something? Or was it that the guitar that was in it was uninspired/dull?

haha, well you know... generally you're right, but therion does a good job with it. Plus Mats Levin is a greeeaat vocalist.

I like his voice on it too, however, he does not really have that many vocal parts as a whole at all. It seems to be much more dependant on the opera vocals and choir arrangements.

OK, same ol same ol, what kind of music is this ? Does the singer sing or does he grown like a hound dog with his balls caught in the barbwire and a raccoon hanging from his ears ?

Seriously though ?

I'll go look for samples I guess but "Death Metal" and "Symphonic" "Choral arrangements" are turning me off already. Can someone give me a specific song or album which is awsome and shows talent over substance

My quest continues...........

Ok, the first three albums are death metal. They have LONG SINCE completely denied their death metal roots (though on lemuria i believe, there are a FEW growled passages... honestly nothing to get excited or turned off about). Essentially on most stuff there is no real "lead singer"... its orchestral and choral driven. A few songs WILL have a real singer... this is one of my personal faves, though quite more guitar driven than orchestra, and the live version (which i can't find on youtube) just slays the album...

Sorry about the gay final fantasty vid, just listen to the song though. They also do a cover of Abba's Summernight City (pretty interesting). This is more typical Therion

Finally, Rise of Sodom and Gomorrah live at wacken

I wouldn't say these are necessarily the *best* songs, but i like them and they stand out to me. Any other suggestions folks?

OK, Like the first one, love the main guitar riff, interestingly the vocal part sounds like one of LaBries modes....... howdja like me now ?

Number 2 - OK these guys are wacked but Im a bit worried.... I might like it. Good voice (dude) and DAMN!.... nice breasts (not the Dudes)

Number 3 - I get the picture, I could listen to this, would be a different influence, still dont think Ill be an ochestra/choir guy, Im all about guitar riffs and great vocalists like say ............. [clears throat] ....... GEOFF TATE ....... lol

thanks for your time Zach

sure thing, and if you are more into riffs and great vocals, i'd say check out more of the live stuff... Mats Levin (former Yngwie singer) does a lot more on the latest Live CD/DVD set than he does in the studio, which is fantastic IMO. Plus, he does a kick ass Lemmy...
