Therion

I have mostly heard stuff from Theli onwards. I think I own "of darkness" but I probably bought it with a bunch of other records and never quite came to giving it a chance.

I do prefer the heavily symphonic stuff like "secret of the runes" or "deggial" but I also dig the latter stuff. Allthough the big problem with modern Therion (Lmuria/Sirius and Gothic Kabballah) is that I thought they could have released one cd and made it killer. As it is now there are a few tracks on each disc I dont like all that much or that doesnt come up in the high standard as the greatest songs on either disc.

Out of the first three, Symphony Masses is the best. I've never understood the love for Beyond Sanctorum. Its sounds like very standard blarghu death metal, though I'm sure I'm missing some hidden meaning or other such nonsense. Add it to the list of highly praised (ANUS) albums that just seem so plain and dry along with Massacra, Demilich, and Morpheus Descends.

Lepaca Kliffoth or whatever was pretty decent, as was Theli from what I remember, but its been probably a decade since I heard anything post Symphony Masses.

How in the holy mother of fuck is Demilich plain and dry?

Well, I think most people know that I love this band. Lepaca Kliphoth was pretty dull as far as I recall, but I love their more recent material. Secret of the Runes is a fantastic album.

If you'd said Unleashed/Merciless/At the Gates/Necrophobic, we might have something to talk about.

You get the idea, there are a ton of fantastic Swedish Death out there, Therion's death metal material is decent and quite unique, but calling them the best that Swedish Death can offer is pushing it too far.

Therion piss me off sometimes. They come out with good records one day, and potentially good records the next. The last album I truly liked by them was LEMURIA/SIRIUS. I really got irritated when they dropped the death growls, and Matts Levans. They lost their best guitarist too, so this band has become a solo project of hired guns rather than a real band with history and chemistry. I am real sketchy on the next album, I don't have high hopes anymore.

It was always a solo-project except for the first few records. Sure some musicians were in the band a lon time but it was always a one-man show. That being said I was really bummed Mats Levén decided to quit the band. I love his vocals. And now Snowy Shaw also quit (even if he's on the new album). The guy who replaced Mats doesn't hold a candle to him unfortunately (at least not when I saw the band live a few years back).

Fuck I just remembered that I have the 'Celebrators Of Becoming' dvd boxset which i've barely looked at,it's got a shitload of stuff in it,about 4 dvds and 1 or 2 music cds.'Secret Of The Runes' is my favourite Therion album.

I'm surprised there isn't more hate for their symphonic material. I mean let's be honest, they pulled an Amorphis on us.

Yeah but honestly...it was a natural progression for Therion, they're about the only band that I can think of that can and have actually gotten away with shit like that and have it accepted as part of their eclectic discography.I love their symphonic stuff. They are the only band of that style that I listen to.

In my dictionary, pulling an Amorphis is a bad thing.
