Yeah, they covered Remember Tomorrow, so what? That doesn't have anything to do with Maiden having random guitar wankery in their music (even though I do think the solos are really good).
To me Maiden are good at it though, the solos fit well IMO. Where as a band like Iced Earth just plop solos in for the hell of it adding even more cheapness to their generic sound.
I love solos, however they have to be well placed.
Opeth dont go overboard on solos and rely more on harmonies which works for me too.... using solos sparingly but making them really good when they are used is much better that liberally just sprinkling them all over the place.
Anyway the guitar solo is a male testosterone adrenaline mastubation thing and personally I need it in my life
Advent is another great example of a song (a fairly long one at that) not needing a solo. I don't see why some bands need to put a solo in every single song.
How 'bout because they ran out of good ideas 2 albums ago and that's all that's left. To come up with one great solo and play it 17 thousand times and call it a song.

I agree with you for the most part, except for Iron Maiden. They are one of the best examples of guitar wankery there is.
