I can't break it down but i'll put it into categories. Since nobody can really say.

Most Creative:

1.Jimi Hendrix - there's two types of guitar styles, those before Jimmi Hendrix, and those after Jimmi Hendrix.
2.Eddie Van Halen - Technique invention and innovation
3.Chuck Berry - invented alot about rock and roll guitar phrasing.
4.Tonni Iommi - No heavy metal without him
5.Muddy Waters - Started electrifying blues music

All those players are turning points in the way the guitar was looked at and played.

Technically advanced:

1.Steve Vai - Can play anything
2.Paul Gilbert - Hurts my brain
3.Yngvie Malmsteen - needs professional help
4.?? - can't think (please add one here)...Rhoads??
5.Buckethead, Bumblefoot - Wtf!

Chops for days... maybe these guys should have got out more??

Most Balls, Style, Personality and Attitude:

1.Jimmi Page - sloppy, but all rock n roll swagger.
2.Angus Young - His picture is in dictionary next to the word attitude.
3.Dimebag - Can't be imitated, possibly the heaviest guitar player on record.
4.Zakk Wylde - Look at him, this guy means business
5.Stevie Ray Vaughn - can hit one note and make you feel his pain, blues personified

May not have best finger technique, but these guys will MAKE you feel it!

Guilty pleasure: Kurt Cobain - The most primal, brutish, boneheaded, guitarist i've ever heard, a breath of fresh air after the self wacking guitarist that copied the really good ones in the 80's. Unfortunately people today use him as an excuse to not learn how to play at all. Although they have none of his songwriting or melody writing ability.

Can't say who's best, neither can God, he just enjoys them all, so should you.

:worship:

I like this post, mostly for its honest reality and attitude.

I am unfimiliar with many guitar players but those I have and will alway enjoy the most for their musical contributions are: in cronological order

Hendrix
Page
Witkowski/Griffiths
DiMeola
Morse
Van Halen
Vaughan
Oliva
Bratto
Satriani
Petrucci
Romeo

In absolutely no order except Vai & Guthrie

Steve Vai
Guthrie Govan
Allan Holdsworth
John Petrucci
Michael Romeo (not for his solos necessarily)
Greg Howe
T.J. Helmerich
Brett Garsed
Marty Friedman
Richie Kotzen

Technically advanced:

Yikes! None of those guys have super duper sickening technique except for Buckethead & Bumblefoot. Giblert is a good picker, but he's also a very linear player who has a penchant for running Magor Scale Modes. Very overrated in the guitar community. Here is a guy with personality who is good at marketing himself, but there are plenty of guys out there who can play circles around him if put in a corner. Yngwie has clean impressive technique, but a lot of guys surpassed him bigtime. He's not one of the faster shredders really. Get Rhoads the hell off that list too Bro.

Greg Howe annihilates all those except for maybe Buckethead & Bumblefoot.

maybe

Giblert is a good picker, but he's also a very linear player who has a penchant for running Magor Scale Modes..

very true

Very overrated in the guitar community. Here is a guy with personality who is good at marketing himself, but there are plenty of guys out there who can play circles around him if put in a corner.

I disagree. His articulation and overall right-hand prowess sets him apart from a lot of other players.

Unfortunately it wasn't a "fastest" list, so no point in saying that really. You are right though that a lot of people have surpassed him.

Greg Howe annihilates all those except for maybe Buckethead & Bumblefoot.

:lol:nope. This is coming from from someone who is a HUGE fan and owns almost everything greg has recorded (I still don't have the Howe II records). His legato technique is pretty killer, but there are still a lot of players who wipe the floor with him from a technical standpoint. His phrasing, ability to navigate through changes (espcially considering how relatively little theory he knows), and overall feel for the instrument are incredible though.

anyway, @progmetalpilgrim:

I was looking back through the eariler pages of the thread, and have to ask...you HAVE given Holdsworth a proper listening by now, right? If not, we need to rectify that asap.

How can someone bash Paul Gilbert? he's awesome guitarist and has played some really cool stuff. And yeah, the picking technique is outstanding.
My list would also include
-Michael Romeo
-Guthrie Govan
-Buckethead
-Bumblefoot
-Marty friedman

and some other one's..

hmm

John Petrucci
Jason Becker
Marty Friedman

Paul Gilbert
Yngwie J. Malmsteen
